Let’s Talk About Litter Along the Roadside
Take a look at the verges and lay-bys along many of our roads, bottles, cans, takeaway boxes, wrappers, and bags. It’s not falling from the sky, it’s being thrown from moving cars.
This mess doesn’t just spoil the view. It damages wildlife, blocks drains, and costs councils thousands to clear. It’s lazy, careless, and completely avoidable.
When our volunteers go out litter picking, around 80% of what we collect is from the side of the road, in the gutter and along the grass verge that runs beside it. We don’t do it for fun; we do it because we want our area to look cared for and tidy.
So next time you finish that chocolate bar or that can of drink, think before you wind down the window and chuck it out. Could you hold onto it for a few more minutes until you find a bin or reach your destination? That small bit of thought makes a big difference.
Litter kills an estimated three million animals every year. Discarded roadside rubbish and food attract wildlife to their death. Use a bin, or wait until you get home.
We’re proud to be working with National Highways to support their “Lend a Paw – bin your litter” campaign. This initiative urges road users to think of our small creatures, reminding people that discarded roadside rubbish, even food or fruit peel, attracts animals to danger. The message is simple: “Lend a paw — bin your litter.”
