No woman should have to justify what happened to her.

EVA Women’s Aid is recruiting a Children and Young People’s Counsellor to join our specialist team.

This is a part-time role of 15 hours per week, providing specialist counselling and therapeutic support to children and young people under 18 who have experienced or been affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.

We are looking for someone with:

💜 Knowledge and understanding of domestic and sexual abuse and its impact
💜 Understanding of child protection and relevant legal requirements
💜 Knowledge of counselling/psychotherapeutic interventions, both theoretical and practical
💜 Strong crisis management skills and the ability to manage difficult situations
💜 A relevant degree, equivalent experience or vocational qualification
💜 Membership of BACP or an equivalent professional governing body
💜 Computer literacy and experience using databases

🚗 A current full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

THE MYTH IS THAT THEY “JUST SNAP”.
Lethal violence rarely comes out of nowhere. Recognising patterns of control, stalking, coercion and escalating behaviour matters.
Understanding the warning signs can help us recognise risk, take concerns seriously and create opportunities to intervene before violence escalates.
It’s about recognising risk, not predicting the future. Awareness can save lives.

The idea that someone can simply "snap" can make devastating violence feel sudden and impossible to understand.
Jane Monckton Smith's research showed that, in many cases, there are patterns of behaviour and escalation that can be recognised.
Understanding those patterns matters.
Because recognising risk early can create opportunities to intervene, increase safety and potentially prevent the situation from becoming more dangerous.
Abuse is about patterns of behaviour and control, not someone simply losing control.

You never know what someone is carrying.

Leaving isn’t always the moment safety begins.
For some women, leaving can increase fear, risk and uncertainty. Staying can be a way of surviving, buying time and trying to stay safe.
Being afraid and staying can make sense at the same time.
Instead of asking, “Why didn’t she leave?” Ask: “What made leaving feel unsafe?”
