If you stand across the road from our gallery and look up to the window of our second floor office you may notice that a camera has appeared (look for the word "HUB" and it is in the middle of the "U"). Rumours are rife amongst the online community as to what this could be for... A speeding camera for seagulls? An attempt to disprove the curvature of the Earth? Monitoring big pharma's attempt to seed clouds across the Redcar skyline?

Well, no. Actually it is none of those things, rather it is a beautiful artwork by Susan Collins as part of her practice of situating long duration cameras in locations across the world to create her images capturing a changing landscape second by second over the course of a full year.

The camera records a fixed view point, writing the image one pixel at a time, moving across and down the image. The complete image is generated over 6.5 hours, mirroring the flow of the coastal tides. Each new image overwrites the previous image line by line, meaning that at any one time we will be looking at a landscape from different moments, even different days: a sky from dawn, an horizon line from mid-morning and a foreshore that is still represented by the night before. Movement is fragmented as the turbines become glistening specks on the skyline and passing boats and birds become dots and lines within the landscape. The images in this post show the camera being installed on Monday this week by Susan supported by the technical wizardry of Matthew Jarvis, together with a couple of the first images to have been captured.

The work will be included in our forthcoming exhibition Common Stars: Art & the Starling which opens on 3rd July and visitors will be able to watch the images update live over the course of the exhibition, giving a starlings eye view of the landscape and this magnificent stretch of coastline. Susan Collins is Emeritus Professor at Slade School of Fine Art in London and founder of the Slade Centre for Electronic Media in Fine Art. She is based between London and Whitby.

☘️Marsh Trods
A hands-on creative workshop where participants build small 3D mythical creatures- “Marsh Trods” using found and recycled materials. The activity blends:
• Creative making
• Local folklore
• Wildlife storytelling

🎛️Nature Loops
Join us to explore the hidden sounds of Coatham Marsh and transform them into music.
Across two workshops, you’ll learn field recording techniques, discover local wildlife with an expert
guide, and collect natural materials from the landscape.

🎧Live Marshes Listening
Led by Sally Rodgers and Steven Jones, this site-specific workshop explores the sounds of the
marshes through live, immersive listening. Participants will experience the landscape through a network of microphones capturing birds, water, and environmental textures in real time. These sounds will be transmitted wirelessly to headphones, creating a shared, intimate listening experience that reveals hidden details of the
environment.

🔮The Deep Esoteric Council
A creative workshop by Professor Sarah Perks that explores the connection between tarot symbolism, imagination, and nature recovery. Using tarot cards as a storytelling and reflective tool, participants are invited to consider how archetypes, intuition, and the wisdom of the natural world can inspire new ways of caring for landscapes and ecosystems.

Apply by 25th April via our curatorspace link in our bio

‘Common Stars: Art & Starlings’: our Summer exhibition that uses the natural instincts and socialisation techniques of the Starling bird to curate the show.

How do the strategies that Starlings use to survive translate into exhibition techniques and strategies?
We are looking for works that respond to themes such as
* Murmurations - mass,multiplicity and pattern formation
* Mimeticism/Mimicry
* Complex systems
* Indigeneity/Rootedness/Locality
* Scaveging/Salveging/ adaptability
* Irridescence, shimmer
* Community and sociability
* Mythology
This is not an exhaustive list, and we are excited to see how artists translate the ways of the Starlings in their work.

‼️📣Announcing the launch of “Into the Spirit - Paranormal Investigators” ZINE📚

During our “Into the Spirit” exhibition back in October 2025, we had our Paranormal Investigators desk set up in the gallery to collect ghost stories from our visitors, our investigators being the wonderful Audrey Cook (.and.ginger), Carmen Marcus (), and Lizzie Lovejoy ()! Using these personal ghost stories as a foundation, our investigators went on to create a series of exciting stories and poems which feature in this zine! The zine also features photography by the brilliant Karolina Duskova (), who also featured in the Into the Spirit exhibition.

✨If you like tales of the weird, the spooky and the strange, then this zine is available for you to purchase NOW at ✨

On Tuesday we announced that we at Tees Valley Arts had submitted a Town of Culture bid on behalf of Redcar & Cleveland Cultural Partnership and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Here’s a little more about what that means.

Town Of Culture is a new initiative announced last year by the UK government. The first town will be announced for 2028. We are hoping that this could be Redcar. If we are successful the town will have £3m to deliver a programme of activities over the course of the year that will have been decided upon by the residents of our town.

Even if our town is shortlisted, we will receive funding to develop the full bid. We would use this to create a new Citizen’s Assembly so that the people of our town have every opportunity to decide upon the kind of cultural activities they want to see in Redcar, not just for 2028 but on an ongoing basis.

Whilst Tees Valley Arts has led on writing the bid it has been a collaboration between over 30 different community based groups and discussions with over 200 people. We have focussed the bid on the TS10 postcode, bringing in Redcar Seafront and High Street (from the Gare to the Stray) as well the residential areas through to Kirkleatham. It is a chance for us to celebrate some of the great culture we have here already and to dream about what else we might want to see. The application has included a new story of the town which we commissioned from local author and fisherman’s daughter Carmen Marcus, who has explored the importance of the sea to our communities over the town’s history.

Can we win? competition will be fierce but we have a good bid and do you know what - Let’s do this!
