Mildenhall & Red Lodge kicked off their league campaign away at Saffron Walden under perfect conditions sunshine overhead, a firm pitch, and a squad of 22 players, a huge step forward from last season’s visit where the club scraped together just 14–15. Morale was high, intent was clear: this season M&R are no pushovers.
Saffron Walden’s 2XV came into the game strong after an 87–12 win the previous week, so M&R knew they were facing a well‑drilled outfit.
SW started fast, scoring in the corner for a 5–0 lead. M&R responded with powerful carries from the forwards and some brilliant last ditch defence to keep themselves in the fight.
A turnover at the ruck allowed SW to break away and score again, this time converting for 12–0.
M&R hit back with pressure in the scrum, and quick thinking from Brandon K saw him dive over the line for the club’s first try of the season. The conversion drifted wide, but momentum was shifting.
Just before half‑time, SW capitalised on space out wide to score again.
Half‑time: Saffron Walden 17 – 5 M&R
M&R came out firing after the break, and Brandon B powered over the line to close the gap. Morgan added the extras, bringing the score to 17–12 and signalling that M&R were very much still in the contest.
Midway through the half, Saffron Walden introduced a number of highly seasoned players who brought a noticeable shift in tempo and physicality. Their experience and composure made an impact, and despite M&R’s continued determination, SW were able to capitalise and add three further tries to secure the result.
Despite the scoreline, Mildenhall & Red Lodge did the club proud. The effort, resilience, and refusal to give up were clear from first whistle to last. Against a strong, experienced SW side, M&R held firm and prevented the score from running away.
A huge thank‑you to Saffron Walden for their hospitality — we look forward to welcoming you back for what promises to be another fair, competitive fixture.
And a special mention to the referee: without you, the game wouldn’t have happened.
Man of the match
Forwards
Brandon Berry was outstanding at forward, bringing a fierce attacking game and putting the defensive line under constant pressure. He consistently punished the defence with his intensity and physicality, while never backing out of a challenge. A relentless performance from start to finish.
