Charlie Savage and Benn Ward drop in at our Cantley Football Camp.

The young players at Cantley had a week to remember last week, as Reading duo Charlie Savage and Benn Ward came along to meet them.

Both players took part in a Q&A with the group, answering questions and sharing a bit about life as a professional footballer. They then stayed on for photos and spent time signing boots, shirts and tops, making sure everyone went home with a memento of the day.

The camp is part of the Kellogg's Football Camps, delivered by Reading FC Community Trust, giving children the chance to develop their skills, stay active and enjoy their football during the school holidays. Reading Football Club

Hayden Roberts and Randell Williams tell their stories at our HAF Camp

Two players, two very different routes into the professional game, and a group of young people at our South Reading Community Trust Hub in Whitley who were hanging on every word.

Reading duo Hayden Roberts and Randell Williams joined our HAF Camp this week, and both spoke really well about how they made it as professional footballers. What made it especially interesting was just how different their journeys have been, and the kids stayed engaged throughout as Hayden and Randell talked through their contrasting stories. It was a great reminder that there is no single path into the game, and that everyone's route looks a little different.

The group also took on the Citizen Watch challenge, trying to guess when a second had passed without looking at the clock. It brought plenty of laughs and a bit of friendly competition to round off the session.

Both players were brilliant with the group, and the young people clearly took a lot from hearing their experiences first hand.

The camp forms part of the government's Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, delivered locally by Reading FC Community Trust in partnership with Reading Borough Council. The programme provides children across the town with access to sport, activities and healthy meals during the school holidays, and the visit from the players gave those taking part a memorable moment alongside their sessions. Boyd Butler of the Community Trust is doing a triathlon with zero training. That is the point.

Anyone can train for months and finish a triathlon. Frankly, that is the boring version. Boyd is taking on the Reading Triathlon on September 13th with no training whatsoever, because the discomfort is the entire idea. A small, deliberately ridiculous amount of suffering, in exchange for one deliberately precise sum: £200.

That £200 does exactly one thing. It pays for one person to take their Level One coaching badge. Not a vague drop into a big fund. One badge, one person, and quite possibly the start of a livelihood, or the reason a hundred local kids get coached properly for years to come.

Boyd first worked at Reading FC in 1998, left in 2006, and came back twenty years later to find the same community still here, still worth it. Every week the Trust reaches over 3,500 people, from a toddler's first kickabout to its Dementia Café.

So Boyd gets cold, wet and thoroughly humbled. Someone else gets a career. That feels like a very good trade. Please back him.

Lewis Wing and Liam Fraser share valuable lessons at our South Reading HAF Camp...

There were some big smiles at our HAF Camp today as Reading players Lewis Wing and Liam Fraser came down to spend time with the young people taking part.

Held at our South Reading Community Trust Hub in Whitley, the session gave the children the chance to hear first hand what it is really like to be a footballer. Lewis and Liam talked about how it is a process of constant improvement, and how you might not make it first time, but you have to keep trying. Lewis also spoke about leadership, and what the qualities of a good leader might be. All good lessons for the kids to take away, and all the more powerful coming straight from two players who have lived it.

The kids and players also took on the Citizen Watch time challenge, trying to guess when ten seconds had passed without looking at the clock. It made for some good fun and plenty of laughs, and we are pleased to report the kids were closest, edging out the players on the day.
