We're delighted to be starting to deliver Connect to Work as part of the People Hub in Cornwall, working alongside Cornwall Council and the Council of the Isles of Scilly.

In this short video, Antoinette, our Employability Manager, introduces the programme and explains how we'll be supporting people across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to move towards and into employment.

Building on our history of delivering employability programmes in the region, we'll provide personalised, one-to-one support for people facing barriers to work. As part of this delivery, we'll also bring specialist expertise in supporting refugees, alongside the wider support available through the People Hub for anyone who could benefit from help finding, securing, and sustaining employment.

We look forward to continuing our work with local partners, employers, and communities to help more people access opportunities and achieve their employment goals.

This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the people across Sunderland giving their time to support others in their communities👏

Our participant Jay has enjoyed volunteering with a local food bank, helping him build confidence, meet new people, and take positive steps towards work.

Volunteering can be a great way to gain experience, build skills, and feel more prepared for the workplace while making a real difference to others.

Heard of the hidden job market? Up to 60% of jobs are never advertised. Here’s why, and how you could access it:

Why does this happen? It can cost a lot of money to advertise a job, and if employers are small or local, they often simply don't have the budget. Plus some employers like to interview people recommended by someone they trust. They often fill roles through word of mouth or networking before ever advertising.

So, how can you access the hidden job market?

1️⃣ Tell people you’re looking. Whether it's friends, ex-colleagues or family, people can’t recommend you if they don’t know you’re job hunting.

2️⃣ Make the first move. Reach out to employers you're interested in. A polite email or LinkedIn message with your CV can put you on their radar before a job goes live.

3️⃣ Network with purpose. Local Facebook groups, LinkedIn, community centres, or volunteering can all be great sources of information.

4️⃣ Follow up. Keep in touch with people you've spoken to. A quick “just checking in” message can go a long way.

Being proactive and showing you are keen to work somewhere before a vacancy is advertised can put you on a great first footing with an employer.

Virtual interviews can feel different to meeting in person, but the preparation you put in makes all the difference. Treat them just as seriously as a face-to-face interview and focus on the details that help you come across at your best.

A few things to keep in mind:

✅Test your camera, microphone and internet connection in advance.
✅Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a clear background.
✅Dress smartly, even if you’re at home - it sets the right tone.

Remember body language still matters: sit up straight, smile and look into the camera rather than the screen.

Having your CV and notes to hand can be helpful, but try not to read from them because the more natural your answers sound, the stronger the impression you’ll make. And if the technology does glitch, stay calm and have a backup plan, such as a phone number you can call.
