📚 Welcome back to a new school year!

As schools welcome children back after the summer, our ABC to read volunteers are getting ready to begin another year of helping children build their confidence and enjoyment of reading.

Over the next few days, our fieldworkers will be in touch with volunteers to welcome them back, share updates and help everyone get ready for the year ahead.

A big thank you to all our volunteers for the time, patience and commitment you give to the children you support. We’re looking forward to another great year together. 📖

Welcome back, volunteers — and here’s to another year of helping children become confident readers!

Welcome to the autumn term! 🍂

A new term means getting back into our reading sessions, welcoming new children, and helping more young readers build confidence and enjoy books.

It’s going to be a busy term, and we’re looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting lots of new ones.

And remember, we’re here to support you in any way we can. 💛

Summer is nearly over.

But the reading doesn't have to stop.

If your child has found a book they love this summer, keep going.

If they have discovered a new type of story, find another.

If reading has been difficult, keep the sessions short and positive.

And if they have made even a little progress, celebrate it.

For a child who struggles to read, progress doesn't always look like finishing a chapter.

Sometimes it looks like trying again.

Here's to a new school year and many more reading adventures.

We are delighted to share that ABC to read has received funding from the Abri Community Fund.
Thanks to this generous support, we will be able to place more trained, safeguarding-trained and DBS-checked volunteers into schools across Berkshire. This will help more children who are struggling with their reading to build confidence, skills and a love of books.

We are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. Alongside her extraordinary musical legacy, she will be remembered for her belief in the life-changing power of books and reading.

Through her Imagination Library, Dolly helped bring stories into the lives of millions of children. For a child struggling to read, the right book and encouragement can be the start of a very different story.

Her generosity and belief in children will continue to make a difference for generations to come. Thank you, Dolly.

The summer holidays may be coming to an end, but we are just getting started!

As teachers and children prepare to return to the classroom, ABC to read is getting ready to place our trained and vetted volunteers into local primary schools.

Every child deserves the chance to become a confident reader. For some, however, reading remains a daily struggle. The right support, and someone patient to practise with, can help change that story.

If you are a Berkshire school looking to improve reading attainment, we would love to hear from you.

ABC to read is an award-winning charity and the only charity in Berkshire providing comprehensive reading support through trained and vetted volunteers.

Who says reading has to happen at a desk?

This summer, take reading outside.

Read in the garden.
Read on the beach.
Read in the park.
Read the menu while you're out for ice cream.
Read the road signs on a journey.

For children who struggle with reading, finding opportunities to read without it feeling like “school work” can make a real difference.

Every word counts.

You don't have to be a teacher to help a child read.

You can help simply by:

Reading together
Talking about the story
Helping with a tricky word
Celebrating their effort
Reading a favourite book again

For a child who struggles with reading, encouragement matters.

They don't need someone sitting beside them saying, “You should know this.”

They need someone saying:

“Let's work it out together.”
