📚 Tomorrow is Bookshop Day! 📚

A visit to your local bookshop can open up a world of stories for a child.

For children who struggle to read, finding a book they love can be an important first step towards building confidence and discovering the joy of reading.

This Bookshop Day, we’re celebrating the bookshops that help bring stories to life — and the difference that reading can make to a child’s future.

❤️ Love your local bookshop. Help more children discover the joy of reading.

Today we are delighted to be attending the Judicial Service in Reading.

It is a privilege to be part of this important occasion and to join others from across our local community.

At ABC to read, we are proud to be a Reading-based charity working to support children who find reading a challenge. Being connected to the wider community is an important part of our work, and we value opportunities to meet and build relationships with people and organisations who share our commitment to making a positive difference locally.

A great morning at our Reading volunteer book exchange! Thank you to Whiteknights Ibc Indoor Bowls for letting us use their space.

It was lovely to see volunteers sharing books.

And we spotted a little bit of ABC to read pride in the photos too — Terry proudly wearing his ABC to read sweatshirt, while Malcolm appears to have perfected the art of the photobomb! 😊

Happy Harry Potter Books day! We agree with Dumbledore, words hold so much magic and what an amazing thing to help children find that magic. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for helping children every day find that magic in books and poems and plays and more!

This research from Chapter One highlights why the work of reading volunteers matters so much.

At ABC to read, we see first-hand the difference that regular one-to-one reading support can make to a child’s confidence, enjoyment and progress.

It also highlights the important role that businesses can play. With the right support from their employer, many working adults would consider volunteering their time to help a child learn to read.

Our volunteers give their time. Our corporate partners help make that possible. Together, we can give more children the individual support they need to become confident readers.

New academic year, and a new group of ABC to read volunteers.

Today we deliver our first volunteer training session of the new academic year, welcoming a fantastic group of people who have chosen to give their time to help children who are struggling with reading.

We know that volunteering is a commitment, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who decides to become part of the ABC to read community.

Thank you to all our new volunteers for choosing to support ABC to read. We are delighted to have you with us and look forward to seeing the difference you will make this academic year.

Today, we’re holding the first of our autumn term book exchanges, giving our volunteer reading mentors the opportunity to refresh their collections of books and games, ready for another term of supporting children on their reading journeys.

Alice in Wonderland was published over 160 years ago and is still loved and known by so many! Why not pour a cup of tea and a slice of cake to celebrate Mad Hatter day!

We recently delivered one of our Buddy Workshops atLeighton Park School, helping pupils develop the skills and confidence to support younger children with their reading.

We were delighted to receive such positive feedback from the pupils.

Feedback like this matters because our Buddy Workshops are not simply about teaching children how to support a reader. They are about helping them understand the difference they can make to another child’s confidence, enjoyment and progress.

For a child who finds reading difficult, having an older pupil who is patient, encouraging and knows how to help can make reading feel very different.

We are now looking to work with more schools who would like to develop reading buddies and create a stronger culture of reading across their school community.
