On Saturday night, we were honoured to join Reading Street Pastors on patrol in Reading Town Centre and witness first-hand the incredible work they do to keep people safe.
The evening got off to an early start with a call for assistance at 10pm, when the team responded to support a member of the public at O’Neill’s. Throughout the night (until past 3am!), we observed the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of the Street Pastors as they patrolled the town centre, offering help and reassurance to anyone in need.
Reading Street Pastors are a charity who provide practical support and a reassuring presence for those who may be vulnerable, distressed, or simply in need of assistance late at night. They also operate a Safe Space, providing a place of refuge and support, with trained First Responders and a Paramedic who can provide treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, helping to reduce unnecessary visits to the A&E Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
This weekend alone, the Safe Space supported seven people on Friday night and a further five people on Saturday night.
During our patrol, we saw countless examples of kindness and care. Volunteers helped individuals who had become separated from their friends, were vulnerable due to drink and nightlife, and assisted people in arranging safe journeys home. Their presence on the streets provides reassurance and plays a vital role in keeping Reading's night-time economy safe.
Reading Street Pastors work closely with Thames Valley Police, venue door staff, local bars and clubs, and other community partners to ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe night out. We were particularly impressed by the respect and appreciation shown towards the team by members of the public, many of whom recognised the Street Pastors and stopped to chat or thank them for their work.
This remarkable team gives up their Friday and Saturday nights to support others, making a real and lasting difference to our community. We would like to thank them for welcoming us and allowing us to see their work in action. We look forward over the years to building a relationship with Reading Street Pastors and supporting their important work in the future.
