We recently visited local charity Reading Men’s Shed to learn more about their outstanding work supporting men’s wellbeing across the local community. During the visit we met with Stuart Freebody, Chair and Trustee, and Barry Fowler, Trustee, who provided insight into the charity’s ongoing initiatives and future plans.
Established in 2015, Reading Men’s Shed has become a vital community hub, offering a safe and welcoming environment where men of all ages, particularly those who are retired or experiencing social isolation, can come together to connect, share skills, and build meaningful friendships. The organisation plays a significant role in tackling loneliness and supporting mental health by fostering a strong sense of belonging. They continue to evolve in response to the interests and needs of its members, remaining open and inclusive to all men regardless of age or experience.
During the visit, we had the opportunity to observe members engaging in a variety of practical activities, including woodworking and metalworking. The workshop’s well-equipped space enables members to work at their own pace, while training opportunities ensure accessibility for those new to these crafts.
At its core, Reading Men’s Shed is about connection. Alongside hands-on projects, the organisation provides a comfortable social space where members can gather over tea and coffee, encouraging natural conversation and strengthening wellbeing through shared experiences.
The charity also makes a meaningful contribution to the wider community through volunteering and collaborative projects, reflecting its commitment to making a positive impact beyond its membership.
John Sykes praised the dedication of the team and commented, “Visiting Reading Men’s Shed was truly inspiring. The sense of camaraderie, purpose, and support among members is remarkable. It’s clear that what’s being built here goes far beyond practical projects: this is a community where friendships are formed, confidence is rebuilt, and lives are genuinely improved. I was delighted to see firsthand the positive impact the Shed continues to have across Reading.”
