Dear friends and parishioners,

Once again, the time is near, when we have to hold our elections for church council. Every member of the church who has paid their subscription is eligible to vote and to stand for election.

Unlike the Church of Greece or the Anglican church, we receive no state support. The operation of our church relies completely on the good will of the volunteers who sacrifice some of their time and energy to run the church, and also the spiritual and administrative oversight of the Archdiocese. This simply means that if we do not get enough volunteers for the church council, or to help out with candles, with baptisms and such extra services, and also enough financial support from yourselves, we will not be able to operate. We have resisted circulating a collection basket during the services, as this can be distracting, but for this reason it is imperative that you give your support to the church and Greek school through your annual subscriptions and anything else you may afford.

The smooth operation of the church suggests that as many parishioners as possible get to know their parish council members, and are ready to stand for elections themselves. We can always make good use of professionals, of people who can help with finances and accounts, experience with local authorities, fundraising, construction experience and many other talents. But more than that, it is good to get involved in the administration of your church, even if only to see how the church is run, and to vote.

Therefore, we can announce the parish elections for this two-year term on Sunday 3rd December, right after the service, at 14:00. Please stay in the church for our Annual General Meeting, to be followed by elections for council members and officers. The more you get involved in the running and administration of your community, the healthier your community is!

Αγαπημένοι μας μαθητές, γονείς και εκπαιδευτικοί

Ελπίζω να είστε όλοι υγιείς και δυνατοί και να περάσατε ένα υπέροχο καλοκαίρι.

Με μεγάλη μας χαρά σας ανακοινώνουμε την έναρξη της σχολικής χρονιάς 2023/2024 στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο του Reading, την Κυριακή 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2023, στις 11.15π.μ. στο Hall της εκκλησίας του Προφήτη Ηλία (94 Cranbury Rd, Reading, RG30 2TA).

Τα παιδιά θα έχουν μάθημα 11.15 π.μ. - 13.30 μ.μ., την 1η, 2η, και 3η Κυριακή κάθε μήνα (και την 5η - αν υπάρχει).

Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ όλους για την αγάπη και την υποστήριξη στο σχολείο μας. Ανυπομονούμε να σας ξαναδούμε όλους και να γνωρίσουμε τους νέους μαθητές μας και τις οικογένειές τους.

Dear pupils, parents and teachers

We hope that you are all in good health and that you had a wonderful summertime.

With great joy we want to announce the start of the School Year, 2023/2024, at the Greek School in Reading, on Sunday, 17th of September 2022, at 11.15 am, at the Hall of Prophet Elias Church (94 Cranbury Rd, Reading, RG30 2TA).

The lessons will be taking place from 11.15am to 13.30pm on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sunday of each month (and on the 5th Sunday as well - if there is one).

Thank you very much for your dedication and support to our school and we are looking forward to seeing you all again and welcoming our new pupils with their families.

Welcome to the Greek School of Reading page.

The Greek School operates to help parents to teach our language to our younger generation and maintain our heritage.

The School provides Greek education from Reception to GCSE level and is open to all children of our community.

Details of the School's Curriculum can be provided on request.

TIMETABLE
The School operated every Sunday from 11:15 - 13:15 in the Hall next to the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias, Reading.

CLASSES
We run 5 or sometimes 6 classes, based on pupils' age and abilities in the Greek language:
- a Reception class for young children
- a GCSE class for older children with adequate knowledge of the Greek language, and
- 3 or 4 intermediate classes (2 classes for bilingual pupils and more confident Greek speakers/readers, and 2 classes for English speakers to develop their confidence with the Greek language).

STAFF
The School is directed and managed by our School Head, Dr. Stella Keramida. Dr. Stella Keramida and her team of teachers are all professionally qualified and experienced teachers, and have the support of the Ministries of Education of Cyprus and of Greece.

SCHOOL TERMS
The School year has 3 Terms:
- September to December (with a break for Christmas)
- January to April (with a break for Easter)
- May to July (with a break for the Summer holidays)

Term dates are usually announced to parents by email.

SCHOOL DAYS
The School operates on our church premises during our Greek and English Orthodox Services:
- 1st Sunday of each month
- 2nd Sunday of each month
- 3rd Sunday of the month
- 5th Sunday when the month has one
Please note that there is no Greek nor English Orthodox Church Service and no Sunday School on the 4th Sunday of every month, which is reserved for Serbian services.

VOLUNTEERS AND FUNDING
If you are willing to give your time and knowledge, we are always looking for volunteers to help our children to learn about their great heritage and culture.

We rely entirely on our community to fund the School, and we invite parents to consider a monthly voluntary contribution to help us to cover the costs.

If you are not a parent but would like to support us financially, we welcome your help with the costs of running the School.

Το Ελληνικό Σχολέιο λειτουργεί ωστε να βοηθήσει την Ελληνική κοινότητα και τους γονείς του Reading και των γύρω περιοχών να κρατήσουμε ζωντανή και να περάσουμε την Ελληνική γλώσσα και κουλτούρα στην επόμενη γενιά.

Παρέχουμε Ελληνική εκπαίδευση από την τάξη του νηπιαγωγείου έως και επίπεδο GCSE με τεράστια επιτυχία.

ΩΡΑΡΙΟ
Το σχολείο λειτουργεί κάθε Κυριακή από 11:15 - 13:15 στο χωλ δίπλα από την Εκκλησία του Προφήτη Ηλία, Reading.

ΤΑΞΕΙΣ
Λειτουργούμε 5 ή 6 τάξεις, ανάλογα με την ηλικία και τις ικανότητες των μαθητών.
- Τάξη Νηπιαγωγίου (Reception)
- Τάξη GCSE για μεγαλύτερα παιδιά με επαρκή γνώση την Ελληνικής γλώσσας
- 3 ή 4 ενδιάμεσες τάξεις, 2 για δίγλωσσα και δύο για αγγλόφωνα παιδάκια.

ΠΡΟΣΩΠΙΚΟ
Η διευθύντρια του σχολείου είναι η Dr. Στέλλα Κεραμιδά. Η Κα. Κεραμιδά συνεργάζεται με μία ομάδα από έμπειρες/ους, πιστοποιημένους δασκάλους, υπο την αιγίδα των Υπουργείων Παιδίας της Ελλάδας και Κύπρου.

ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ ΕΤΟΥΣ
Το σχολικό έτος έχει 3 τρίμηνα:
- Σεπτέμβριο με Δεκέμβριο
- Ιανουάριο - Απρίλιο
- Μάιο - Ιούλιο

Οι ακριβείς ημερομηνίες ανακοινώνονται στους γονείς μέσω email.

Το Σχολείο λειτουργεί βάσει του παρακάτω προγράμματος:
- 1η Κυριακή κάθε μήνα
- 2η Κυριακή κάθε μήνα
- 3η Κυριακή κάθε μήνα
- 5η Κυριακή κάθε μήνα (όποτε ο μήνας έεχει 5 Κυριακές)

ΕΘΕΛΟΝΤΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΧΡΗΜΑΤΟΔΟΤΗΣΗ
Εαν θέλετε να μας υποστηρίξετε σαν εθελοντής, και να βοηθήσετε τα παιδιά να μάθουν την Ελληνική γλώσσα και κουλτούρα, παρακαλώ απευθυθείτε στην διευθύντρια τους σχολείου.
Το σχολείο δεν λαμβάνει καμμία χρηματοδότηση από την Ελληνική ή Κυπριακή κυβέρνηση και βασίζεται αποκλειστικά στα δίδακτρα και δωρεές.
