Lobaria pulmonaria or 'Tree Lungwort' is an important lichen species in Miterdale. It is a strong indicator of temperature rainforest and thrives in all of the wet weather we recieve on the west coast.

This week, we have been translocating pieces of tree Lungwort from Borrowdale into Miterdale. This should increase the genetic diversity of the small fragments that remain in the valley and keep the population strong whilst the temperature rainforest environment slowly returns to support it and thousands of other lichens and bryophytes. Thanks to Pete for the donation!

Some winching and moaning with the slow progress of removing invasive Rhodedenron in Miterdale recently.
Fast new fence above Wasdale though. Impressive work and quality job from Adam Jackson Fencing. Tough terrain.
The Coppice Co op have done a great job removing the regenerated Sika spruce.
And always great work from the many merry volunteers who have been out in all weathers, planting lots of trees.
Thanks to everyone for all their hard work!

Father Christmas has visited Miterdale early with the gift of two new staff members! Some of you may already have met Francesca and Tom, who have recently started at NRM as Assistant Project Officers. They've been getting to grips with meeting the lovely volunteers, and hopping on the chainsaws to fell some Sitka spruce that has strayed outside its bounds. Miterdale itself welcomed them with a rainbow, hopefully a sign of good things to come.

✨Voting is Open!✨

Nature Rich Miterdale is part of a suite of nature restoration projects led by the University of Leeds. This includes Restoring Hardknott Forest and the Upper Duddon Landscape Recovery in the Duddon, Wild Ingleborough and Snaizeholme in the Yorkshire Dales, and Gair Wood and the Public Forest Estate in Leeds.

Together, these projects make up the Alliance for Northern Nature.

Our big news is that the partnership has been shortlisted!

The projects are showing how nature restoration can help increase resilience to the impacts of climate change for generations to come – and with school visits, volunteer events, and employment opportunities, the projects are transformative not just for nature, but the local communities, too.

We have reached the final shortlist, in the 'wild' category, to receive funding from the EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association, and the winner will be selected by a public vote.

You can vote here: https://www.eocaconservation.org/vote/

Thank you! 🌱

Come to Miterdale next Friday for a lovely autumnal day in the valley.

We'll be doing practical conservation activities to help restore nature to Miterdale, and hopefully spotting some fungi on the way!

Be quick though, there are only a few spots left!

Any scrap iron! We've been removing decades old deer fencing and abandoned piles of wire recently. This will help contractors gain access into the ancient Oak woodland to remove non-native tree species like Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Rhodedenron. These species smother the native flora of these valuable habitats.
You can help restore these ancient places too! https://bag.leeds.ac.uk/projects/nature-rich-miterdale/volunteering/
