Gosforth Village Shop Update
Gosforth Parish Council regularly engage with David and Michelle for updates on the situation with the village shop. They are still in talks with their insurance company who are being very obstructive, but they remain hopeful that the insurance company will eventually pay out so they can rebuild a shop and family home.
Since the fire in August 2024, the Parish Council, with funding from GDF, put on a daily taxi service to Seascale but unfortunately the uptake was not enough to continue the service. We contacted all local business owners to see if any were interested in opening a pop-up shop, but none were interested due to the costs of setting it up – equipment etc., which make it unviable in the short terms. We have approached Co-op and Spar to see if they would be willing to do a pop-up shop, both declined. We have spoken with Cumberland Council over concerns for the structure and they say it is currently safe but are keeping a close eye on the building. Environmental Health say there is no pest activity in the area.
Gosforth PC do not own the land so cannot apply for grants or loans to rebuild the shop.
We have written to MP, Josh McAlister, to see what help he can offer and Cllr David Moore is also actively looking into ways to help move the situation forward. We will continue to meet with David and Michelle to offer our help where we can, and hope that someday in the future we will once again have a village shop.
David and Michelle have commented ‘We are actively engaged with challenging the insurance company who have been unhelpful and refuse to release any information from their investigations to anyone. The shop and family home were fully insured. Their lawyers are actively involved and are being looked at by the financial ombudsman in trying to gain information and overturn the decision from the insurance company. They have consistently refused to release any information on their refusal or basis of refusing to honour the insurance policy... much to our frustration.
In the interim we are exploring other avenues in financing a new shop and village hub. The timescale is out of our hands; it took almost a year to even get any feedback or progress report on the insurance claim and as we are sure people can appreciate this will be a large claim and insurance companies by nature are reluctant to pay any claim if they can help it.’
