On Tuesday we celebrated the wonderful impact GOLD has had over the year on our members. Everybody shared their highlights and Raushan Ara, Mayor of Ramsgate and Leo Britcher, Mayor of Margate came and celebrated with us.

GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) has spent over a decade supporting people with a learning difficulty in Thanet to build confidence, gain independence and take part in their communities in ways that work for them. After 11 years, the programme has now come to an end.

While GOLD as a service is ending, its impact continues through the relationships, confidence and independence it has The National Lotteryss the community. GOLD was funded by the The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund – we have been extremely grateful for the opportunities and impact brought by this funding.

Rosie said “GOLD’s been good for me, I have a dyslexic son and it helps me with him and I have met a load of new friends”

Follow us for more on this story, including the fantastic impact it has made to our members and what we will be doing next.

This is Ellie. Ellie attends our Herne Bay Hub and started going to the gym last year. At first, she didn't know how to use the equipment - but that didn't stop her.

By attending weekly sessions with support, Ellie has built her confidence and skills. Now, as soon as she arrives, she's ready to get into "gym mode". She enjoys mixing up her workouts and spending 10 minutes on each machine.

Ellie says: "I am really proud of how independent I am in the gym. I feel really good after my workout."

We're incredibly proud of Ellie's determination and the progress she has made.

We're excited to announce that we'll be launching our Ashford Hub fundraising appeal on 15 June for Learning Disability Week! 🩷

Later this year, we'll be opening a brand new East Kent Mencap hub in Ashford - a welcoming place where people with a learning disability can make friends, learn new skills, build confidence and feel part of their community.

We're hoping raise £700 - essential funds to furnish and equip the space before it opens. Your donations will provide furniture, creative resources, games and activities that will enable people with a learning disability to develop greater independence and thrive in a safe, supportive space.

We’re delighted to have been chosen as Christ Church Sport & Active Health’s Charity of the Year 🩷

We’re especially excited to be kicking off the partnership at the Vice-Chancellor Business Games taking place this June, all in support of East Kent Mencap.

Partnerships like this help us continue supporting people with a learning disability across East Kent, while also building stronger connections within our local community.

A huge thank you to everyone involved - we’re really looking forward to working together and seeing what the partnership brings over the year!

Dennis and Ian recently achieved a goal they had been working towards for some time 🩷

On 25 April, the pair travelled independently to Arsenal Football Stadium to watch Arsenal v Newcastle - planning the journey, organising tickets and making their own way to and from the match.

This was a personal goal discussed during key worker meetings, and both Dennis and Ian worked hard to make it happen. With support from staff member Martine, Ian planned the journey, worked out the costs and booked the tickets, before contacting Dennis with all the details for the day.

When they arrived, they faced a ticket issue - but worked together to sort it out independently.

Dennis said he loved the atmosphere when the goals were scored and enjoyed singing along to the football chants with the crowd.

Ian shared that a fellow supporter hugged him during the celebrations, which made him feel part of the matchday experience.

Since the trip, Ian has already set himself a new goal - to attend an Arsenal game independently in the future.

We’re incredibly proud of both Dennis and Ian. This is a brilliant example of building confidence, independence and achieving personal goals through East Kent Mencap’s housing services 🩷
