Today, we celebrate 4 years of Open Arms. This project started as a way to welcome young asylum seekers and refugees aged 13 - 21 years coming to Thanet, to show them that people care and that they can feel at home, here at Pie. We are proud of the community that has grown here each week over this time - cooking, dancing, laughing and learning together. As our Open Arms project lead Moa says "It's worth remembering while 'refuge' is a temporary status, 'community member' is not. In times like these, we need every reminder that every young person deserves to feel at home.

Show Open Arms your support by buying one of their cookbook, which celebrates the healing power of food. Each dish in this book tells a story of memory and belonging, and through the recipes, stories, and photos, it captures the community that has formed around Open Arms.

Buy now for £15 at https://shop.piefactorymusic.com/products/open-arms-cookbook - every £ goes to support this programme.

What does courage mean to you? For , our Open Arms participants (young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees) got creative with artist Steph Kkailou and project lead Moa to make a moving original sound piece. 🎶

Over four sessions, the group explored themes of courage, belonging, hope and community, sharing their experiences and reflections through conversation, music and sound. When asked if they had courage, every single young person said YES 🫶

Our Open Arms participants are young unaccompanied asylum seekers who have travelled across the world on their own, leaving everything behind for a safe, new beginning. They are resilient, kind, funny, and full of hope.

As one young person said: “For me, I have courage, because I came all the way from Somalia, only walking, even through the water…”

This track is a celebration of their voices, their stories, and their pure heart.

The piece premiered on Margate Radio last Friday and will be played at ARK’s festival on Sunday. You can hear the track online from Wednesday 24th June on all streaming platforms.

WE WON! takes home the prestigious SMK National Young Campaigner Award!🏆 Our young campaigners - Miles, Molly, Jacob and Luke - headed to a glittering London ceremony last night where writer and comedian Viv Groskop crowned them national winners. Here's them receiving the award.

Selected from hundreds of UK entries, our Thanet group was the only collective community campaign in their category. This national recognition marks the climax of a massive grassroots movement. When Kent County Council threatened to auction off Ramsgate Youth Centre - the district’s last dedicated youth centre - our young people refused to back down.

Through a gruelling 16-month campaign, they:
💛 Rallied the community through public advocacy and crowdfunding.
💛 Lobbied decision-makers to protect their space.
💛 Secured crucial funding from the Ramsgate Pride in Place programme via a grant from the Neighbourhood Board.

Thanks to their relentless drive, we took full ownership of the youth centre site in February, safeguarding it for generations to come.

When receiving the award, our young campaigners said:

Miles - "Everyone in that building is going to go 'yeah we believe in you'. That's the beautiful thing, it doesn't matter what you like, where you're from, who you are, as long as you come in with a smile and you're polite to everyone you are welcome as part of the family at Pie Factory and that's something that really needs to be cherished within the community."

Luke - "This campaign was strongly young person led which I think is quite key when it comes to campaigning - not all young people and teenagers are careless, unbothered - they really do care. It wasn't just us four it was many many other people - everyone got involved."

Jacob - "We had a poem that we turned into a song - the poet used to go to Pie many years ago. Anything we could do - like talking to local businesses."

Molly - "Community - it brought everyone closer together. It's about making sure that you get together as a community and help everyone."

Thank you Thanet! 🙏

This award is a testament to the power of young people's voices and collective determination. We are immensely proud of our young people, and deeply grateful to our community for backing us every single step of the way.

Let’s celebrate! 🎉Show our champions some love by sharing their achievement on social media and dropping them a congratulatory message 👇

Giving some throwback love to our youth workers Luis, Connor and Jeff who, one year ago today, completed their epic 250-mile Piecycle challenge from Portishead to Ramsgate to . Now, we're the proud owners of the Ramsgate Youth Centre site (thanks Pride in Place programme!) AND our young people have been nominated for the SMK National Award in recognition of their efforts to save the building.

What can we say? It's been quite the year and we just feel so proud of the Pie family and our community for never giving up. Let's keep fighting for young people's voices to be heard and spaces like ours to thrive and not be threatened with closure. Onwards...
