Wonderful film screening this Friday matinee 2pm

PASSION FISH (15) 2hr15

Writer/Director John Sayles observations of the dynamics between patient and caregiver, after his experience working in a nursing home after graduation - was the inspiration behind this tale of a spoiled New-Yorker soap star, whose life is changed after being hit by a car. She returns to her native Louisiana as a grumpy patient to a caregiver just out of rehab. Out of a battle of wills, grows a deep friendship. A beautiful film accompanied by the Cajun music associated with the Louisianna setting.

This WEDNESDAY 3rd June 7pm

21 GRAMS (15) 2hr4

A multi-layered crime/thriller and true arthouse film for the more serious film fans. A very good, intense second film by Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu which brings together a weighty cast of Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and Benicio del Toro.
A tragic hit-and-run car crash, brings together three strangers through inter-connecting stories through a non-linear narrative. A heavy, yet rewarding watch exploring grief, guilt and redemption.

As an accompaniment to Wed's screening of the supernatural hit, Weapons - this Friday matinee 2pm, we bring you, the great, classic Sci-Fi, the celebrated:

THE VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (12) 1hr 17

Come early and stop by for a cake from the newly opened Bakehouse 21 opposite.

A tense, well made adaptation of the John Wyndham novel, The Midwich Cuckoos, it brings psychological build rather than cheap jump scares. A chilling British classic celebrated for its eerie pacing from the start, when the residents of the quiet village of Midwich suddenly fall asleep. Awakening, as if nothing has happened, until all the women of child-bearing age find themselves simultaneously pregnant. They give birth to a group of disturbing hiveminded children who appear to have supernatural powers.

Doors open half an hour before screenings.

WEAPONS (18) 2hr9

In this supernatural tale, when all but one child from a classroom disappears at exactly 2.17am, the experience unfolds through the perspective of their teacher, a grieving father and the sole remaining child. If you like multi-layered scripts, the film’s title captures the many ways in which people can become weapons, through their actions, including blame and scapegoating, and the physical use of various tools. Critically acclaimed with a stand out performance from Amy Madigan, particularly, as the boy’s spooky aunt, garnering her a best-supporting Oscar.
A pied-piper subtext of mind-control has inspired following this with Friday’s 2pm matinee screening of the classic 1957 Midwitch Cuckoos adapted from the John Wyndham novel.

Friday matinee 2pm. We are screening:

HOBSON's CHOICE. (U) 1hr 47

David Lean's comedy/romance classic. If you have never seen it, you are in for a real treat. If you have, it's always worth another visit. The absolutely sublime Charles Lawton plays the cantancorous patriarchal father who tries (desperately) to control his three, strong-willed daughters. His eldest, Maggie (played superbly by Brenda de Banzie) is having none of it and sets up a rival bootmaker's shop with a marriage proposition to timid Will Mossop (John Mills) proving her business acumen and Mossop's talents.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE (15) 2hr13

We are so excited to be screening this excellent, Nordic/Bergman-style family drama evolving around an egotistical, ageing auteur played by Stellan Skarsgard, whose career is slipping, who turns up to persuade his actress daughter to star in his latest film; her refusal ignites old wounds. (Subtitled)

Hey, our awesome audience - This Wednesday 7pm screening;

IF I HAD LEGS I'D KICK YOU (15)

Critically acclaimed intense comedy/drama. An absolutely gob-smacking performance from Rose Byrne, worthy of her Oscar/Bafta-Noms, as a working-mum experiencing a chaotic, high-stress breakdown. Directed by Mary Bronstein, a mentally taxing and rollercoaster of a film to watch, yet a profoundly rewarding work of art.

Screenings begin again tomorrow with SINNERS (15) 7pm (see previous post).

This FRIDAY 1st APRIL Matinee 2pm:

THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE (15) 2h17

This time, a Period Drama with music. Another strange, yet visually stunning telling of religious shaker-missionary Ann Lee who was the charismatic founding leader of the missionary of shakers. An off-shoot of the Quakers who believed that shaking would "shake off" sin, evil, and inpurity. Amanda Seyfried shines a capitvating light on her little-known story. With the same writing-directing collaborators as The Brutalist, this time Mona Fasvold as director, Brady Corbet co-writer. Superb cinematography and experimental soundtrack. Stunning, and well worth coming to see.

One for our cinema, maybe?

Payal Kapadia's debut feature All We Imagine as Light (2024) won the Grand Prix at Cannes and became one of the most celebrated films of the year. It was the first Indian film to compete for the Palme d'Or in 30 years. Her patient, observational style and deep empathy for ordinary women navigating Mumbai made the film feel both specific and universal.

Her second feature has been officially selected for Competition at Cannes 2026. The announcement came less than two years after All We Imagine as Light premiered, a remarkably fast turnaround at this level of international filmmaking. The film community is watching closely.
