Amazing story below. This really shows the benefit of skills learnt at scouts, even at such a young age. What a amazingly brave and competent little boy. Could you do the same?
Earlier this week, one of our Beavers, Danny, 7, demonstrated how The Scouts provides , when he came to the rescue of his Mum who suddenly fainted.
Danny was at home with his Mum and 2 year old little sister on Tuesday evening, when his Mum took a rapid turn for the worse. Managing to tell Danny she felt ill, she sat down on the sofa, and then passed out.
Danny, who is the proud holder of his level 2 First Aid Badge, remembered his training and realised that he needed to get a response form his Mum. He began shouting at her and slamming doors to get her to come round, which worked after a short time. Danny then encouraged and assisted his Mum to lay on the floor. Remembering about keeping casualties warm he has got her pillows and a blanket.
With her still barely conscious, Danny found his Mum's phone and managed to get her to unlock it. In spite of never having used a phone to make a call before, he located his step-Dad's phone number in it, and called him whilst he was at work.
Danny relayed everything that happened to his step Dad, who has in turn called an ambulance, able to get the right level of help without having seen his wife based on Danny's information. Whilst waiting for the ambulance and his step Dad to get home, Danny not only kept talking to his mum, reassuring her and keeping her calm, he also ensured his 2 year old sister was OK, helping her finish her dinner and putting on cartoons on the TV to distract her from the situation.
When the ambulance arrived, Danny was able to concisely inform the crew of all the circumstances leading up to his Mum's collapse, helping them understand the situation.
Danny's Mum was taken to hospital where after numerous tests she was discharged and is well on the road to recovery.
Danny's step Dad Tom, who is also the Group Scout Leader for Daybrook and Woodthorpe Scout Group, said
"We are immensely proud of Danny's actions, and I don't think calling him a hero is an exaggeration. The skills he has learnt at Beavers have helped keep him calm in what must have been an incredibly scary and overwhelming situation, and have helped ensure a speedy recovery for his Mum. We will be nominating him for a Meritorious Conduct Award from the Scout Association in recognition of his actions, and also treating him just a little!"
