Amazing story of why you should always carry the means to communicate with you when out on the water.

Here you go scientific proof.

If you go down to the woods today, it won’t just be your legs and lungs that will benefit - your grey matter will also get a very pleasant surprise.

Here is something to aim for. Amazing new record.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who have helped make Northern Explorers everything that it is now. I wish you all the best for tomorrow and thank you for your hard work this year. We have had members move on and head to Uni, new members have joined and we are just in the process of welcoming a new leader to the group also. There are exciting times ahead with Permits that we hope will allow us to broaden our activities even further. All the best and see you in the new year for more fireside food. Nollick Ghennal as Blein Vie Noa.

Coming up event. Fantastic fun for all above scout age, even leaders this year.

Amazing story below. This really shows the benefit of skills learnt at scouts, even at such a young age. What a amazingly brave and competent little boy. Could you do the same?

Earlier this week, one of our Beavers, Danny, 7, demonstrated how The Scouts provides , when he came to the rescue of his Mum who suddenly fainted.

Danny was at home with his Mum and 2 year old little sister on Tuesday evening, when his Mum took a rapid turn for the worse. Managing to tell Danny she felt ill, she sat down on the sofa, and then passed out.

Danny, who is the proud holder of his level 2 First Aid Badge, remembered his training and realised that he needed to get a response form his Mum. He began shouting at her and slamming doors to get her to come round, which worked after a short time. Danny then encouraged and assisted his Mum to lay on the floor. Remembering about keeping casualties warm he has got her pillows and a blanket.

With her still barely conscious, Danny found his Mum's phone and managed to get her to unlock it. In spite of never having used a phone to make a call before, he located his step-Dad's phone number in it, and called him whilst he was at work.

Danny relayed everything that happened to his step Dad, who has in turn called an ambulance, able to get the right level of help without having seen his wife based on Danny's information. Whilst waiting for the ambulance and his step Dad to get home, Danny not only kept talking to his mum, reassuring her and keeping her calm, he also ensured his 2 year old sister was OK, helping her finish her dinner and putting on cartoons on the TV to distract her from the situation.

When the ambulance arrived, Danny was able to concisely inform the crew of all the circumstances leading up to his Mum's collapse, helping them understand the situation.

Danny's Mum was taken to hospital where after numerous tests she was discharged and is well on the road to recovery.

Danny's step Dad Tom, who is also the Group Scout Leader for Daybrook and Woodthorpe Scout Group, said
"We are immensely proud of Danny's actions, and I don't think calling him a hero is an exaggeration. The skills he has learnt at Beavers have helped keep him calm in what must have been an incredibly scary and overwhelming situation, and have helped ensure a speedy recovery for his Mum. We will be nominating him for a Meritorious Conduct Award from the Scout Association in recognition of his actions, and also treating him just a little!"

If you have a son or daughter aged between 6 - 14 and live in the Daybrook, Woodthorpe or Arnold areas who you think might enjoy and benefit from the activities of Scouting, please contact us at [email protected].

Good morning. I light of their being a yellow weather and what can only be described as a biblical down pore just now, I am Addams we are going to have to prospone the cardboard canoe competition. With the need to build the boats on site and the prospect of wet and cold young people and spectators I think it is the only choice. I am unavailable for the next few weeks but will get a new date set as soon as possible before (I would say the weather turns but it has never been that good this year) it gets too cold.

I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused but rest assure we will reorganise ASAP.

Many thanks

Richard

Destruction and creation go hand in hand. Cardboard canoe plans are definitely getting sorted.

This afternoon, myself and 2 of our outgoing explorers set a navigation exercise for our current members to undertake tonight. This evening it was fantastic to see one of our old explorers who is getting ready to head to uni, take the group under his wing and try enhance their night nav as the light faded. We had set some difficult challenges that have allowed us to see where we need to work.

Obviously the photo isn’t from tonight it was in the midst of one of the navigation stages when setting up.

Thank you to all that could make it.

Richard
