As more people choose rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles as pets, it's vital that veterinary graduates feel confident caring for these species 🐇

BSAVA PetSavers has funded a Master's Degree by Research at the University of Nottingham, led by Vicky Strong and jointly funded with the Animal Welfare Foundation UK.

The project will explore how exotic animal medicine can be better integrated into the UK veterinary curriculum, helping to equip future vets with the skills and knowledge needed to support these increasingly popular pets.

Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, yet the factors that influence how quickly the disease progresses remain poorly understood.

With funding from BSAVA PetSavers and the Veterinary Cardiovascular Society , Professor Melanie Hezzell and her team at the University of Bristol are investigating the role of collagen turnover and fibrosis in the progression of MMVD.

By analysing biomarkers over time, this longitudinal study aims to provide new insights into the changes that occur within the heart as the disease develops.

The findings could help researchers better evaluate existing therapies, identify new treatment targets and improve outcomes for dogs affected by MMVD.

Research like this is helping to build the evidence needed to improve canine cardiac care and enhance the lives of companion animals.
