Friends of the South Downs

Friends of the South Downs The only membership charity dedicated to protecting the South Downs. Formerly the South Downs Society. Founded as the Society of Sussex Downsmen.

Originally formed in 1923 as ‘The Society of Sussex Downsman’, we exist today as The Friends of the South Downs, promoting enjoyment of the South Downs as well as protecting and enhancing the environment. Our aim is to maintain and improve the South Downs National Park and its area. We work hard to improve access to the Park and take an informed interest in planning policy and planning application

s. We take a special interest in access, rights of way and other park initiatives both in the park and in the immediate area and are the ‘Critical Friend’ to the National Park Authority. We offer a series of talks on park subjects, to be held throughout the National Park area. Contracts are in place with the National Park to replace stiles with gates and to provide funding to restore a stretch of the South Downs Way that is in very poor condition. Our experienced Walks Leaders organise and lead hundreds of interesting and varied walks all across the beautiful South Downs all year round. We are the only charity dedicated to protecting the South Downs and all our activities ensure that we fulfil our duty in section 4 of the 2006 Charities Act to provide public benefit.
