RSPB Pulborough Brooks

RSPB Pulborough Brooks Protecting and restoring habitats, saving species and helping
end the nature and climate emergency. Nature is amazing but it's in trouble.

Pulborough Brooks nature reserve is home to more than 2000 different species, some of them rare or threatened. The lowland wet grassland is part of the Arun Valley floodplain and is criss crossed by ditches which host some incredibly rare and special creatures and plants. The grassland, pools and scrapes provide feeding areas for our wintering wildfowl and nesting areas for our wading birds. On hi

gher ground we are developing wildflower meadows and managing arable fields for winter finches. These are linked by hedgerows and scrub to woodland areas, all of which are vital for our nesting songbirds, small mammals and bats. We're gradually restoring an area of lowland heath which now features ling and bell heather as well as cross-leaved heath. Along with acid grassland, wooded edges and bare ground it is home to some specialist heathland wildlife including breeding nightjar, pantaloon bees and small red damselfly. Let's step up and save it – together. Find us on Twitter

The 'non-bird' side of the wildlife sightings board is filling up nicely now we have some sunshine again - newts in the pond, dragonflies & damselflies on the seasonal trail and our first Marbled White butterflies of the year.
The bird list features one of my summertime favourites - the Hobby. Look out for them dashing and swooping over the ditches and riverbank.

Join The Urban Birder at an RSPB reserve 🐦🌿
We’re excited to share something a bit special…
To celebrate 20 years of The Urban Birder, David Lindo is coming to a selection of RSPB reserves across the UK for a series of small, friendly guided walks – and you’re invited to hop onto one at Pulborough Brooks reserve.
Whether you’re new to birding or already love getting out into nature, this is a lovely chance to spend time outdoors with one of the UK’s most recognisable wildlife voices. David will be sharing tips, stories and helping you see the reserve in a whole new way.

✨ A few things to expect:
• A relaxed, welcoming atmosphere
• Plenty of chances to ask questions
• Tips to help you spot birds wherever you are
Places are limited, so if it sounds like your kind of day, we’d love to see you there.

As more and more dragonflies and damselflies start to emerge so does this rusty coloured ‘trousered’ bird of prey. Hobbies are one of the smallest raptors that can be seen soaring across the fields and ditches around the reserve.
Did you know?
The tabletop football game Subbuteo was named after the hobby after the trademark office refused its creator Peter Adolph’s application to call it ‘Hobby’.

Great to see White-tailed Eagle appearing on the board almost daily at the moment. Whilst many of our Lapwing and Avocet chicks are now adult-sized, we've spotted some young Redshank chicks from Winpenny hide and there are lots of bird families in the hedgerows and woodland.
Here's yesterday's sightings board:
