1248 Prudhoe Squadron Air Cadets

1248 Prudhoe Squadron Air Cadets At 1248 Squadron, we offer many opportunities for young people aged 12-19. Have a look at what we do!

The Air Training Corps, or Air Cadets, is a youth organization linked with the RAF offering opportunities to anyone between the ages of 12 and 20. Being linked with the RAF allows us to provide activities not available to other youth groups. As well as learning to fly powered aircraft and gliders, there are also chances to visit RAF bases both at home and abroad. Even if aviation isn't a big inter

est, there are many other activities available. Adventure training is a big part including walking, climbing canoeing, and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Field craft training, plenty of sporting activities, leadership and life skills are all on offer too. Where else could you find all of these activities and more all within one organization?

A massive well done to the 8 cadets who attended today's Inter Squadron Volleyball Competition at The Graham Sports Centre in Durham.

With an excess of 160 cadets and staff in attendance from across 18 units within the Wing, it was great to see come 9th overall! A fab improvement on last year's results!

Many thanks to FS Wake, Sgt Bannister, Cpls Leyland and Matthews and Cdts Bolton, Coulson, Jordan and Özarar for coming along and representing the squadron.

Special thanks to WO Gault, FS Matthews and CI Bolton who helped with transport and the running of the event.

The next sporting event is inter-wing athletics on Saturday 30 May - we want to see as many cadets as possible signing up to represent the squadron. Remember every cadet turning up for these events (regardless of how well they do) gives us points to the inter-squadron sports trophy 🏆🏆🏆

🧗 Indoor Climbing 🧗

has spent some recent parade nights over at Newburn Leisure Centre.

Under the guidance of our climbing instructors FS Armstrong and CI Peel, cadets had the opportunity to try indoor climbing and learn how to belay.
Alongside this, when weather allowed FS Matthews supervised cadets doing sports on the outdoor pitches.
Many thanks to WO Alan Farrimond for being on hand to assist when needed.

✈️ MARCH FLYING FOR 1248! ✈️

saw a trio of our cadets head to to spend their Friday getting the chance to do some Air Experience Flying!

FS Wake, CDT Ritchie and Cdt Wharton headed to 9 & 11 AEF where, once they got their safety briefings out of the way, took to the skies!

A very enjoyable day all around for our cadets and a special thank you to 1248’s Aviation Officer, CI Wallis , for giving up his time to enable this opportunity for our cadets.

Drill is a core part of RAFAC training, building confidence, resilience, and attention to detail. Continuity drill, without commands, takes this to a higher level and pushes those skills even further 💪

This video shows our cadets completing "the magic circle" where every movement relies on focus, awareness, and trust in the team. No voices, no cues… just sharp ex*****on and complete cohesion.

Many thanks to West Denton Community Centre for hosting us.

🌟INSTRUCTOR CADET SUCCESS🌟

Last month at 1248 we saw Cpl Gardener undergo his Method of Instruction assessed lecture and we are delighted to say he passed with flying colours.

Over the course of the past several months he has underwent assessments on squadron before being formally assessed this past week!

Going forward he will wear his yellow lanyard to signify his achievement and assist in the delivery of Squadron training.

Congratulations to Cpl Gardener!

🥉 Bronze DofE Success! 🥉

A huge congratulations to Cpl Kelleher and Cdt Akerman who have achieved their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award! 🎉

Both cadets completed their qualifying expedition in July 2025, but that was only one part of earning the full award.

To achieve a Bronze DofE, participants must complete:
✨ Volunteering: Giving time to help others or support their community
✨ Physical: Improving fitness through a regular physical activity
✨ Skills: Developing a new skill or building on an existing one
✨ Expedition: Planning, training for, and completing a two‑day, one‑night expedition

These sections show commitment, resilience, and determination — and both cadets have demonstrated all of these throughout their DofE journey.

Well done both! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Farewell and thank you, Sgt Madl!

Sgt Madl officially left 1248 (Prudhoe) Squadron last month after an outstanding 1,349 days of service, giving over 53% of his cadet career as an NCO since his promotion to Corporal on 8 February 2024.

During his time with us, he achieved a range of qualifications including Youth First Aid, Silver Leadership, and Bronze Space. He also proudly represented the squadron at Wing sporting competitions and successfully completed both his JNCO and SNCO courses.

Sgt Madl has been a committed role model, a positive influence on younger cadets, and a valued member of the NCO team.

Thank you for everything—and we wish you the very best for the future.
