It may be our summer break but when an opportunity for adventure arose, we couldn't resist! West Lancs Scouts caving took us to Ingleton to explore Runscar caves 1-4.

The Scouts had an amazing day showing resilience, bravery, and courage whilst doing something that was new to them all! I didn't go in the caves but I have seen some videos and the highlight for me was the unintended audio where you can hear the Scouts encouraging each other to solve to tricky problems presented by the confined space.

Things we learnt:
Sunscreen is needed for everything.
Scouts struggle putting a onesie on.
You can't have too much vinegar.
Iphones are hard to locate.
You can crochet on a minibus.

Last night, Cubs and Scouts decided to make the best of the beautiful weather and get outside. Cubs went on a lovely walk collecting litter along the way and doing a service to the local community. Of course, Cubs being Cubs they found a playground and blew off some steam before having a well earned ice pop.

The Scouts didn't go as far from the hut, instead they completed their knife skills course by breaking down logs into kindling and starting their own fires to make s'mores. The session was in danger of going off the rails but the Scouts did what they do best, grabbed knives and axes then headed off into the woods to improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Leaders from both sections were full of praise for the kids who managed to not get lost, run over, wounded or burnt; unlike our Scout section leader who stabbed himself in the finger!

Fantastic kayaking trip last night. Well done to Wolf patrol and the other scouts selected for this reward trip by consistently demonstrating the values that are our foundation. Thanks to Steve and the West Lancs Splashu team for making it a great session.

The Scouts have been working towards their knife passport over the last few weeks.

They started off whittling small bars of soap with plastic knives, then progressed to some really impressive carvings in week two using Swiss Army Knives or other metal knives.

We’ve included some of the creations here (they’re all fish or some kind of aquatic life form!) and the ones judged the best by a sort-of independent judge all won 20 points for their patrol. Next week we’re hoping to use some of the skills they’ve learned in a practical, camp-type situation.

They all deserve loads of praise for progressing so quickly, they’ve concentrated hard, stuck to the rules and kept themselves and each other safe while learning skills that should be really useful to them while doing outdoor activities. Or at the very least making some delightful presents out of soap for future birthdays and Christmases.

While Kerry and her family have no direct connection to BSJ, Kerry was clearly very active in supporting the development of young people at Lostock Hall Juniors Football Club ,something we can associate with entirely.

The team at BSJ are all saddened to hear the tragic news coming from Hoghton this morning. We know what a tight knit community we have around us and the impact this will have.
The thoughts of the whole team go out to those directly impacted, as well as the wider community, we will offer whatever support we can.

Thanks to generous grants from both The Robert Hall Foundation & The National Lottery Community Fund, we have been able to by ourselves a 50th Birthday present. The bus will be given the BSJ treatment in the coming weeks and new adventures will follow!

I am very pleased to announce that we have today been informed that we have received a gant of £10,000 from towards the purchase of some group transport. We are extremely grateful for this grant and will put it to good use providing even more oppprtunities for our young people. 🚌🚌

Cubs and Scouts came together tonight to welcome the latest members of the BSJ family, to celebrate some Cubs moving up to Scouts and to recognise the recipients of the Chief Scouts Silver award.

Weather doesn't stop training! Final reservoir session for Niamh with then a Lakes expedition to follow and course complete. Back to Spade Mill with Splashu team on Monday to continue the paddle leadership element.
