Talking about death, dying and grief is never easy. But knowing how to does make a real difference 💚

Our Compassionate Conversations training is offered completely free to charity and voluntary groups, helping build confidence and skills to support people through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Each 2-hour session explores how to start these conversations, how to respond with compassion, and how to recognise the ways we can support others in our communities.

We’ve recently delivered sessions at St Bernard’s Hub in Preston and Foxton Youth and Community Centre, where those who attended spoke openly and left feeling more equipped to support those around them.

If your organisation would like to take part, we’d love to hear from you 📧 [email protected]

“Having it so well under control has made a big difference to me.”

When Howard went for a routine six-month dental check-up, he never imagined it would lead to a cancer diagnosis.

After treatment for cancer in his tonsils, He was left dealing with swelling in his throat that affected both his comfort and his confidence.

But thanks to specialist lymphoedema treatment at our Woodside Lymphoedema Clinic, things have improved significantly.

Howard said: “Following treatment, coming to the clinic greatly reduced the swelling in my throat. The swelling was affecting my confidence and having it so well under control has made a big difference to me.”

Howard is one of a number of local people supported through funding from , whose generous £6,000 donation is helping people living with cancer access specialist treatments including drainage, laser therapy, bandaging and compression therapy.

Sometimes it's the lasting effects of cancer treatment that people don't see. Swelling. Pain. Reduced mobility. A loss of confidence.

A huge thank you to The Orange Foundation for helping us continue providing compassionate, specialist care for local people when they need it most.

£1 doesn’t feel like much.

It’s the extra chocolate bar on a coffee run.

A quick tap at the parking meter.

Something small dropped into the trolley without thinking twice.

But given regularly, it becomes something else entirely.

Every £1 a week through the St Catherine’s Hospice Lottery helps make sure someone facing the end of life isn’t facing it alone. It helps fund the care, the time, the conversations, and the quiet support that matters more than most people realise.

And yes, there’s the chance to win too, including a £1,000 weekly jackpot first prize and other cash prizes along the way.

If you’ve ever wondered what a small, regular gift can really do, this is it.

“I think every step is going to hit me.”

Not because it’s tough…but because of what it means to me.

James is taking on Mount Toubkal this year, completely out of his comfort zone, never having done anything like it before.

His dad was cared for by St Catherine’s. What started as day care quickly became so much more. In just 10 months, everything changed… and in those final weeks, the hospice was there for all of them.

His dad loved his time at St Catherines so much, he used to jokingly refer to it as he was going to “play school”!

Even after he died, the support didn’t stop. Counselling helped James find his feet again when everything felt difficult and heavy.

But over time, a feeling that he’d taken, but never really given back stayed with him.

So now, 10 years on, he’s doing something about it.

Something that would have made his travelling and walking dad proud.

And if you’ve ever thought about doing something like this, maybe this is your moment, too!

Join him and book your place: https://www.stcatherines.co.uk/shop/events/hospice-fundraising/mount-toubkal-morocco-trek/

People arrive in trainers, pinning on their numbers, catching up with friends, sharing photos, and taking a quiet moment for the names they carry with them.

Some come as families. Some in groups. Some on their own.

But they’re never alone.

As the sun starts to dim, we set off together on the Moonlight & Memories Walk.

Returning on Saturday 27th June, whether you’re walking in memory, in support, or simply for the atmosphere, every step helps St Catherine’s continue to care for local families when they need us most.

💷 £15 adults | £10 children

👉 Sign up here, online registration closes Tuesday 23rd so don't delay: https://www.stcatherines.co.uk/shop/events/hospice-fundraising/moonlight-and-memories-walk-2026/

💚Thank You Thursday💚

This week we're saying a huge thank you to some incredible supporters who have been going the extra mile for the hospice...

🥾 Tracey, Carol, Lisa and Marie took on the gruelling Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, walking an incredible 102 miles in just 6 days across the Pyrenees into France and Spain. Together they've raised £1,102 for the hospice. Congratulations and thank you, ladies!

🎶 Our hospice choir recently raised £315 while performing at Chorley Tesco. A big thank you to the choir, and to the customers and staff at Tesco for their support. This was their third visit in six months, helping to raise more than £1,200 in total.

☕ Denise and the residents of Burey Court, Longridge raised £260.40 at a recent coffee morning. Thank you for bringing people together and supporting local hospice care.

Every pound raised helps us continue supporting patients and families across our community. Thank you all for making such a difference.

Over the past two days, we welcomed colleagues from hospice, hospital and community settings to our Non-Malignant Conditions in Focus conference, organised by the team at St Catherine's Hospice.

The intention was to move beyond cancer-centred pathways and explore what palliative and end of life care looks like across a wider range of complex, non-malignant life-limiting conditions.

Across the two days, speakers and delegates shared insight and lived clinical experience around Rapidly progressive dementia, Huntington’s disease, long-term ventilation, renal, liver and heart disease, persistent disorders of consciousness, intestinal failure and more. Including our very own Director of Nursing, Tracy Earley. The conference chaired by our Medical Director Dr Andrew Fletcher and Community Consultant Dr Kirsten Baron.

What stood out most wasn’t just the scale of expertise in the room, but the openness of the conversations. People genuinely coming together to challenge practice, ask questions, and learn from one another.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the programme and to those who joined us in person. The engagement, reflection and collaboration throughout the conference really highlighted the importance of shared learning in improving care for patients and families.
