One of the more satisfying times being a Rotarian in Prestatyn is when we can hand out the proceeds of our fund-raising. In this case our 2025 Christmas Float collection and this week our President Colum handed out three more cheques from the money raised thanks to the generosity of the public each December.
Last Friday (March 2nd) we met up at Prestatyn High School with PE Teacher Alex Fuller to give a cheque for £350 which will cover the cost of new kit for the school netball team. Pictured (L2R) Rotarians Amie Dop, Pete Dop, Sumarni Phillips, Rotary President Colum Phillips and Alex Fuller. We’ll get some photos of the new kit when it’s been made.
Prestatyn Rotary Club meet every Monday (6:30) except Bank Hols. at The Beaches Hotel Prestatyn. So the gathered Rotarians were delighted to witness President Colum giving two further cheques at the meeting.
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) are based in Rhyl at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. They support children and young people up to the age of 18 who are experiencing mental health problems.
Representing CAMHS to receive the donation of £2,000 was Sarah Owen, Clinical Team Manager and Emma Gaskell who is a Wellbeing Champion. (Left and Centre in the photo with President Colum).
Sarah explained the tier system in place at CAMHS based on the very wide range of issues young people may have.
She said “Our services are here to support children and young people to get help early. This may include listening to how they feel and offering interventions, information and advice. We also offer support and advice to other professionals, such as GPs, Social Workers, or Teachers”.
Emma added “We do a lot of self fund-raising for items that are not covered by normal NHS funding and we will put this fantastic donation to very good use. It will go towards making the centre a much nicer place to visit during what can be a very stressful time for a young person and their family”.
The final cheque on the evening was given to Danniel Rowe, representing the Bow fc junior football team who play out of Prestatyn.
Danniel is ex-forces and knows the value of discipline and giving young people a good reason for being outside and taking part in a sporting activity. They plan to start a girls team too.
Danniel said “This is effectively a friendship group and safe place for many of the young people who attend. All of our coaches are unpaid volunteers, as well as football skills they teach discipline, life skills and team-work.”
The £500 donation will pay for a set of winter training jackets, a worthy investment in local children and the community.
