Rotarians at Prestatyn Rotary Club were pleased to see three new members inducted into the Club in the last two weeks.

Lisa Lee lives in Prestatyn with husband Matthew. She is a trained celebrant, and Matthew, with twenty years’ experience in business strategy is an Associate of a business consultancy of which he was a co-founder.

Florence Maina (not pictured) is a nurse who came to this country from Kenya and now works as the qualified person in a care home. She knew about the good work carried out by Rotary International in her own country and is very pleased to have been accepted as our newest member.

President Colum welcomed all three into the Rotary family and hoped they would enjoy getting involved in our various activities to help good causes both locally and beyond.

One of the more satisfying times being a Rotarian in Prestatyn is when we can hand out the proceeds of our fund-raising. In this case our 2025 Christmas Float collection and this week our President Colum handed out three more cheques from the money raised thanks to the generosity of the public each December.

Last Friday (March 2nd) we met up at Prestatyn High School with PE Teacher Alex Fuller to give a cheque for £350 which will cover the cost of new kit for the school netball team. Pictured (L2R) Rotarians Amie Dop, Pete Dop, Sumarni Phillips, Rotary President Colum Phillips and Alex Fuller. We’ll get some photos of the new kit when it’s been made.

Prestatyn Rotary Club meet every Monday (6:30) except Bank Hols. at The Beaches Hotel Prestatyn. So the gathered Rotarians were delighted to witness President Colum giving two further cheques at the meeting.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) are based in Rhyl at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. They support children and young people up to the age of 18 who are experiencing mental health problems.

Representing CAMHS to receive the donation of £2,000 was Sarah Owen, Clinical Team Manager and Emma Gaskell who is a Wellbeing Champion. (Left and Centre in the photo with President Colum).

Sarah explained the tier system in place at CAMHS based on the very wide range of issues young people may have.

She said “Our services are here to support children and young people to get help early. This may include listening to how they feel and offering interventions, information and advice. We also offer support and advice to other professionals, such as GPs, Social Workers, or Teachers”.

Emma added “We do a lot of self fund-raising for items that are not covered by normal NHS funding and we will put this fantastic donation to very good use. It will go towards making the centre a much nicer place to visit during what can be a very stressful time for a young person and their family”.

The final cheque on the evening was given to Danniel Rowe, representing the Bow fc junior football team who play out of Prestatyn.

Danniel is ex-forces and knows the value of discipline and giving young people a good reason for being outside and taking part in a sporting activity. They plan to start a girls team too.

Danniel said “This is effectively a friendship group and safe place for many of the young people who attend. All of our coaches are unpaid volunteers, as well as football skills they teach discipline, life skills and team-work.”

The £500 donation will pay for a set of winter training jackets, a worthy investment in local children and the community.

We have just presented the first donation from the proceeds of our 2025 Prestatyn Rotary Christmas Float collection. 🙂

Rotary President Colum Phillips visited Aimee’s Art Group who currently meet at Kings Hall Community Centre in Prestatyn. He was delighted to present a cheque for £500 to Aimee Renee Colville, founder of the group. Aimee is a Community Artist, Wellbeing Champion and Dementia Friend.

Aimee said “Since we started the group in 2015 it has become a creative cornerstone in Prestatyn. Our small, friendly art group has grown into a vibrant Arts for Health and Wellbeing community that supports people across Prestatyn and the surrounding area”.

The group provides a welcoming space for members—both new and long-standing—to explore creativity, connect with others, and nurture mental health and wellbeing. Through art, conversation, and shared experiences, the group continues to help reduce social isolation and strengthen community bonds.

On the day we visited the group were busy making little toy monkeys which, as you can see in the photo were at various stages of construction!

Aimee continued “As we look ahead to 2026, the opportunity to continue this journey means even more people can benefit from the joy and healing power of creativity. Our group remains dedicated to supporting Prestatyn’s wellbeing—one brushstroke at a time”.

We say - keep up the good work Aimee!

A few of us enjoyed a visit to our local cathedral city. Starting with a walk along the river, then up the High Street to St Asaph's wonderful cathedral.

The cathedral is well worth a visit and we'd recommend booking a guided tour - Angela and Mai took us through it's history including the illegitimate child Mungo who became St Kentigern, Oliver Cromwell's men who appropriated the stone font and the cathedral's most significant artifact The William Morgan Bible. It is one of the few remaining Richard Jones reprints of Bishop William Morgan's 1558 translation of the Holy Bible into Welsh. The translation was crucial in the survival of the Welsh language and has played a vital role in the cultural and religious identity of Wales.

There are many interesting nooks and crannies among St Asaph's old buildings. A small property opposite the Diocese offices has a blue plaque - this commemorates the writer of the well known WW2 song "Pack Up Your Troubles" - George Henry Powell, who used the pseudonym George Asaf.

Our little tour ended with a pint and a buffet at the Castle Inn, Rhuddlan.

We enjoyed a very interesting visit to the Avro Heritage Museum, Woodford yesterday. President Colum arranged a private tour of the facility including an excellent buffet lunch. All Museum volunteers are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, many with first hand experience of RAF service or family connections in WW2.

Highlights included Vulcan XM603, Lancaster, VC10 and Ni**od cockpit tours.

On Monday July 28th Bryn Newydd Bowling Club, Prestatyn hosted the local "derby" match between the Rotary Clubs of Prestatyn and Rhyl. The match was very hard fought, with some excellent play interrupted by much laughter and many bowls in the gutter (In my match anyway!) The result was an honourable draw, we think, although not sure whether anyone was really counting.

Rhyl's Centenary President Gordon Marshall thanked the Prestatyn club for arranging the event and reminded all that their Centenary Charter Dinner would be held at the new Rhyl Golf Club and all are welcome.

Prestatyn President Colum Philips thanked the bowls club for their hospitality, and Jean and Malcolm Newberry for providing an excellent buffet as well as arranging a warm and sunny evening!
