PegItForward is a social experiment aiming to prove that kindness is contagious. PegItForward encourages participants to perform good deeds in their local community through this innovative and quirky idea. Participants are referred to online as PegPals. Kindness isn’t a new concept of course and people certainly don’t need a Pegonu peg to do something nice for someone else. We’re not talking abou
t grand gestures or things that may cost money - for example: recycle an item; donate an unwanted item to charity; volunteer for a litter pick, hold a door open for someone to let them pass through (even if you’re not going in the same direction – not as easy as it sounds) or give up your seat for someone else. A smile is free and appreciating each other or saying thank you more often costs nothing either. Here’s the big difference: your Pegonu peg becomes the tangible link to you and your good deed and instigates the challenge to get involved. Participation is encouraged through a mutual desire to make a difference in your local community. Pegonu wooden pegs are hand crafted to identify them and are available FOC from local, independent traders’ listed online at Facebook and Twitter. To re-cap, Pegonu encourages participants to:
o perform a good deed in the local community
o post their good deed on twitter to inspire others
o peg-it-forward using the tangible link of your wooden clothes peg
o passing your peg on - either anonymously, to a friend or by leaving it in a public place for someone to find - inspires others to perform their own good deed
Participants are encouraged to blog about their good deed on social media, combining social interaction in the community with social networking online. The benefits and positive side effects of Pegonu in the local community are that it will help to challenge stereotypes; create an increase in confidence through improved communication skills, create an increase in emotional well-being through the feel-good factor and develop better community cohesion between generations through positive interaction.
