Possibly the longest serving (at the time) small arm that landed on Operation OVERLORD D-Day 6 June 1944!*

The Mk 1 was introduced in 1912 but was still an irreplaceable capability in the British Army. As such it went ashore with a number of units, from the MG Platoons in the motor, airlanding and parachute battalions, Divisional MG Battalions with the infantry divisions and Independent MG Companies in the Armoured Divisions. There was also Vickers GO (the β€˜K’) with the Army Commandos and even 2nd Ranger at Pointe-du-Hoc had them on the Dukw ladders!

Maybe not suited to be movement needed to get off the beaches, it enabled consolidation of positions quickly and gave that 4,500 reach inland when it got into position. It became an active part of the Normandy campaign and units such as (as recorded in A CANLOAN Officer) expended many many rounds from this β€˜Edwardian’ gun.

*Claymore swords and bows and arrows do not count!! Springfield M1903 rifles in use were variants introduced after 1912.

Commander Jones' torpedo boat destroyer, HMS Shark, came under heavy attack from German shellfire during the Battle of Jutland. Jones, though mortally wounded, encouraged his men to the last and only left his ship when it was beyond saving.
