Wishing Carol and Steve Ellis from The London Shipwreck Project all the very best for their amazing marathon effort, raising funds for the campaign.

Their run will begin early on Sunday morning to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and quieter paths. Keep an eye out for them in Southend and Westcliffe if you are up early walking the dog or watching the sunrise.

You can still donate here to help get to their the £1,000 target.

Marathon preparation . Feeling a bit nervous . Slightly sore knee and foot arch ( both getting better). Although we have been tapering , I have felt tired but apparently this is normal. Nutrition and hydration are important - especially as I have a medical issue which means I am prone to dehydration even when I don’t exercise - So with this added challenge - lots of Dioalyte type and salty and sweet sickly snacks .
Weather report is a little chilly and breezy which is great !
I am expecting a slow time of around 6 hours and very happy with anything quicker . Start time will be as ( very) early as possible and by the time most of you are up in the morning I will have a good few miles behind me.

Will be doing this MY WAY - run / walk a bit -hop skip - whatever it takes for 26.2 miles on foot - I will finish . It’s not about the time ( or you could take the train)- for me it’s about enjoying the journey ! Cheer me along virtually wherever you are and if you are in the Southend are and see me, give a shout and a wave .

I will take pics and report progress etc any again MASSIVE THANKS for all your support .

The second London Shipwreck Walk & Talk will be on the 16th May starting at 11.00am

A walk along the length of Southend’s Pier (1.3 miles) with the amazing volunteer dive team that have been working on the wreck for over a decade. Hear from Steve and Carol, about what it’s like to dive in the Thames, right on the edge of the shipping lane. Learn about the wonderful recovered objects that have been saved from the wreck site and that are now displayed at Southend Central Museum.

Please note that tickets do not include the pier walking fee.

What others have said about it:

"We thought it was interesting and as fellow divers from the local area, we particularly enjoyed hearing about the way in which the wreck was explored. The information was presented well and in a humble manner. There was no boasting despite the hard work, skill and determination involved". Sue - Walk & Talk visitor, March 2026.

"It was fascinating, the passion and breath of knowledge of the gentleman giving the talk was astounding" . Lilian - Walk & Talk visitor, March 2026

The London Shipwreck Project and the Save The London campaign is generously supported by Dive Master Insurance and DP World UK.

All money raised will support the volunteer dive team and their efforts to Save The London.

On this day 7th of March 1665, the London warship, flagship to Sir John Lawson accidentally exploded out in the Thames Estuary, whilst in preparation for the Second Anglo-Dutch War.

The sad loss was mentioned by two famous diarists and naval administrators.

Samuel Pepys, 8th March 1665. 'This morning is brought me to the office the sad news of “The London,” in which Sir J.Lawson’s men were all bringing her from Chatham to the Hope, and thence he was to go to sea in her; but a little a’this side the buoy of the Nower, she suddenly blew up. About 24 (men) and a woman that were in the round-house and coach saved; the rest, being above 300, drowned: the ship breaking all in pieces, with 80 pieces of brass ordnance. She lies sunk, with her round-house above water. Sir J.Lawson hath a great loss in this of so many good chosen men, and many relations among them.'

John Evelyn, 9th March 1665. 'I went to receive the poor creatures that were saved out of the London frigate, blown up by accident, with above 200 men.'

John Evelyn,16th May 1665.'To London, to consider of the poor orphans and widows made by this bloody beginning, and whose husbands and relations perished in the London frigate, of which there were fifty widows, and forty-five of them with child.'

To mark this event at 11am today, some of our team are excited to give their first walk and talk (sadly now sold out), along Southend's famous pier.
Hopefully, sowing some seeds to form a lasting legacy, for the poor souls who lost their lives, and to help save our maritime heritage before it's lost forever.
