The Mary Rose

The Mary Rose Home of Henry VIII's favourite ship, the Mary Rose, which sank off the English coast in 1545 after a 34 year long career. Part of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
(1388)

Portsmouth's top visitor attraction on TripAdvisor. Built between 1509 and 1511, she was one of the first ships able to fire a broadside, and was a firm favourite of King Henry VIII. After a long and successful career, she sank accidentally during an engagement with the French fleet in 1545. Her rediscovery and raising were seminal events in the history of nautical archaeology.

🧵From excavation to demonstration

PhD student Laurence has curated a new Secondary Collection Showcase that tells the story of the different weaving experiments undertaken at the Mary Rose, starting from excavation in 1982- from carefully weaving on the actual Tudor-era loom before a replica was made, to her demonstration in the Lower Deck this April using the full size replica loom.

Meet the Mermen 🧜‍♂️🧜🏼‍♂️

The Mary Rose carried an impressive collection of iron and bronze guns, but one of them is particularly eye-catching.
Cast in bronze and decorated with figures of mermen, this gun reminds us that Tudor weapons were often works of art as well as tools of war.

Have you spotted the mermen before?

About Tudor footwear 👞

Hundreds of Tudor leather shows were recovered from the wreck site- mostly lots of fragments or parts of shoes, but a few complete ones and around 70 matched pairs. One surprising detail?
Tudor shoes weren’t made specifically for the left or right foot. Instead, they were straight-sided and symmetrical. Over time, the leather would soften and mould to the wearer’s feet, creating a custom fit unique to them.
Despite the practical design, Tudor footwear came in a wide variety of styles.
