The first Cruthaich session in Ardvasar flew by in a whirl of botanical ink-making and experimenting, talking about the Gaelic spectrum of colour and making polaroid lifts 📷️ Due to demand we are opening these sessions up to Àrd-sgoil pupils of all ages and up to age 25, and there are a few spaces remaining in the next session in Kilmuir on Saturday November 7 🙌

Sessions will be delivered in Gaelic, more info and booking at atlasarts.org.uk.

Today, September 29th, is Latha Fhèill Mìcheil, Michaelmas Day. Traditionally one of the most important days of the year in parts of the Western Isles it marked the start of the corn-harvest and was a time of celebration, gift-giving, baking srùdhain (Michaelmas bannocks), sport, music and dancing.

This series of articles has inspired the themes for Cruthaich, a programme of visual arts workshops which begins this weekend in Ardvasar Hall. The workshops will explore photography, art processes and techniques through place-based practice and themes of traditional Gaelic culture. Bòrd na Gàidhlig Creative Scotland

Inspiration for the Cruthaich project has come from ‘The Quern-dust Calendar’- a series of fortnightly articles published in the West Highland Free Press between 1986 and 2008, contributed by Raghnall MacilleDhuibh (Ronald Black). The articles span a variety of subjects relating to traditional Gaelic knowledge, including weather, the seasons, folklore, customs, ecology, beliefs, work, poetry and song. All are available to explore on querndust.co.uk.

Our first Cruthaich sessions with Angela NicIllebhràighe and Gwen NicGuaire - at Ardvasar Hall on Saturday October 3rd, or Kilmuir Hall on Saturday November 7th - will be exploring Dathan an Fhoghair (Colours of Autumn) through mapping, botanical inks, and experimenting with natural materials in mark-making.

Gwen NicGuaire is an experienced Gaelic educator and visual artist. Her art reflects the harmony between nature’s elements and the ever-changing island light that surrounds her living on Skye.

Along with Angela NicIllebhràighe Gwen is one of the lead artists of Cruthaich, ATLAS Arts’ series of Gaelic arts workshops focusing on Gaelic language, culture and place. For Gaelic-speakers aged 14+, sessions will be held in Ardvasar and Kilmuir Halls. Free of charge but booking required- go to atlasarts.org.uk for details.

🎺 The Dùdan has sounded! Agus abair launch last week! 🩷

🍺 We had so much fun last week launching the Dùdan in the Skye Gathering Hall side bar.

🗞️ You can pick up your free copy of the Dùdan in shops and pubs across Skye, Raasay and Lochalsh, including: Armadale Stores, Bog Myrtle, Cafe Cuil, Create, Kyle Pharmacy, Macintyres, Market Kitchen, Raasay Stores, Rankins Supermarket, Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre, Staffin Stores, The Tongadale, The Old Inn, The Hungry Gull, The Broadford Hotel, The Sona studio shop, Top Shop Broadford, Waystone Books and ATLAS Arts, between 10 September and 10 October.
