From everyone at Portpatrick RNLI, we send our deepest sympathies to our fellow search and rescue crews at Marine Rescue NSW following the tragic events in Ballina, Australia.

The heartbreaking loss of two volunteers is being felt far beyond their local community and serves as a powerful reminder of the risks faced by lifesaving crews whenever they answer the call. Incidents like this leave a lasting impact on families, friends, fellow crew members and the wider community.

Today, we stand in solidarity with all those affected and pay tribute to the dedication, bravery and compassion shown by volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way to help others at sea.

Our thoughts remain with everyone impacted.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

Last night, the Portpatrick Lifeboat crew took part in an important training exercise, continuing to build and strengthen essential operational skills.

Tier 1 crew focused on Helm handling and Radar operations, while Tier 2 crew concentrated on Navigator and Mechanic training.

Although it was a long night, the calm seas and beautiful conditions provided the perfect setting for a productive and rewarding exercise.

Shout
Launch Report – Monday 27th April

At 17:24 on Monday 27th April, Portpatrick Lifeboat was launched following a report from a concerned resident regarding a vessel in distress.

The vessel was located approximately 300 metres south of the harbour entrance. Contact was established, and the occupants confirmed that assistance was required.

Upon arrival, the crew found the vessel at anchor in shallow water, approximately 10 metres from nearby rocks. Following safety checks, the Coxswain determined that the safest course of action was to tow the vessel back into the harbour.

The vessel was successfully brought alongside the harbour wall and secured safely. The lifeboat then returned to station and was made ready for service.

We would like to thank the member of the public for raising the alarm promptly.

An amazing challenge - date for your diary - 2nd May 9am Port Logan

Row4MND is a 4-year endurance mission dedicated to raising vital funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease — with an ambitious goal of raising £57 million for research to help find a cure.

The challenge is inspired by the stories of Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir, whose courage and determination in the face of MND have moved and motivated so many. The crew are rowing in honour of them, and for everyone affected by this devastating disease.

This year, the crew will complete their biggest test yet: circumnavigating the UK by sea.

On Saturday 14th March, they came ashore at Port Logan beach after an incredible 8 days at sea, rowing from Dale to Dublin and onwards to Port Logan — a remarkable feat of endurance, teamwork, and resilience.

Saturday 2nd May 2026 will see the crew return to Port Logan as they set off once again, facing an arduous 10 days at sea to complete the final leg of this journey. Their destination: Edinburgh, where they will complete their circumnavigation.

Every mile rowed brings them closer to their goal — raising awareness, funding groundbreaking research, and giving hope to those living with MND.

Come along to Port Logan at 9am on the 2nd May and cheer the crew on as they head out to sea or support the mission and donate here: https://row4mnd.com
