Last week, the Squadron said goodbye to two of our cadets. Cpl Aran Singh who is transferring to 1271 (Bathgate) Squadron, and CWO Daniel Barnard.

CWO Barnard was presented with a framed version of his Digital Brassard, along with a Shell Jacket with Squadron insignia to reward his many years of service to the Squadron. Staff and Cadets wish both of them all the very best for the future.

On Sunday 8th February 2026, Cadets and Staff from 1143 (Portobello) Squadron joined Cadets and Staff from all across South East Scotland Wing in a parade and church service to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the Air Training Corps.

The parade set off from Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, making its way down the Royal Mile, until it reached St Giles Cathedral where a church service was held.

The Squadron was incredibly honoured to be asked to carry the Wing Banner for the parade, and Cdt Laczynski, FS Collie, FS Sayers and Cdt Chazalmartin did the Squadron and the Wing proud.

Air Commodore Sir John Adrian Chamier, CB, CMG, DSO, OBE (26 December 1883 – 3 May 1974) was "The Founding Father of the ATC" for his role in the foundation of the Air Training Corps. With his love for aviation, he wanted to establish an air cadet corps, encouraging young people to consider a career in aviation - pretty exciting at a time when very few people ever got the chance to fly. His experience in World War I, where training time was very limited, convinced him that the sooner training began the better prepared and experienced a person would be in combat.

Today we commemorate his vision and his lasting legacy. Thank you, Sir
