Portlethen Moss Conservation Trust Sc040350 Portlethen Moss Conservation Trust (SC040350) was formed in 2005 to protect Portlethen Moss, a Local Nature Conservation Site.

Portlethen Moss Conservation Group was formed in 2005 to protect Portlethen Moss, a Local Nature Conservation Site. The group then took on a second project to create a native community woodland near Portlethen Parish Church which is on a separate site from the Moss. A letter was sent to the landowners of the site (Aberdeenshire Council) in 2006 and after planning approval the first ground works co

mmenced in 2008, and the first trees were planted in 2010 - on-going work now continues to maintain the site as it matures.

Before the rain we managed to cut the grass, do some weeding and put lots of plants into the Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden.
This beautiful red tailed bumblebee on the chive blossom and the orchids just show how in under 3 years the garden is developing from an unloved area of grass ( see photo) into a beautiful biodiverse space.

Thanks to this afternoon’s volunteers in the Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden. The grass path and edges got a quick cut before the mower batteries gave in. Then we made a start at the mint sensory bed - more plants to be added.
Lots of colour starting to appear, not least the beautiful violas and pansies that were gifted to us.
Descriptions on each image.

We had a busy afternoon in the Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden. A tidy up as the growing season starts, it’s lovely seeing things coming alive again and we look forward to watching the garden mature as this is only it’s second year. We marked out the area for the second of the new sensory borders.

Please be aware that tick season is upon us and an exceptionally large amount are being found this year on the Moss.
Check your dogs all over when you get home (and yourself!).
You can help avoid coming into contact with ticks if you stick to the paths and don’t allow your dog to run through the areas of long grass and heather (which I know is what they love..)

Thankyou to tonight’s volunteers! We managed to create the new lavender sensory border in the Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden just before the rain returned.
Thanks to Aberdeenshire Council for supplying the logs and Nescan Hub Seed fund which helped pay for the plants and some of the materials. Thanks also to Portlethen Gala for their donation too which also went towards the costs.
Come summer the border will be there for everyone to enjoy and be a great food source for day and night time pollinators.

This afternoon we made a start at the first of our two new sensory beds in the new Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden, before the rain put a stop to things.
Our plan is to create one for lavender and the other for wild fennel and rosemary - watch this space😃
Huge thanks to Landscape Services Aberdeenshire Council for providing the logs.

What a beautiful afternoon we spent in the Community Wildlife & Sensory Garden where we tidied up and planted lots of wild roses, wild mallow and some archangel plants. We found this juicy bright green caterpillar (possibly an angle shades moth) and a lovely ladybird.
We also found a snake!!! Thankfully not a real one, if the owner sees this please get in touch.
Last but certainly not least it was group member John Shackleton’s birthday today and not just any birthday it’s his 90th! I think the secret to his youthful looks is the fact that he cycles everywhere.
Thankyou Greenspace Aberdeenshire for the roses and mallows.

Friday Fact:

This beautiful photo of Velvet Shank mushrooms was taken on the Moss this afternoon.

- They fruit later in the year into winter and are on the gorse stems.
- They can cope with being frozen and when temperatures rise they just carry on growing again.
- The name literally means velvety stalked and the stem is softly downy.

There’s so much biodiversity to see on a walk around the Moss at any time of year.
