In 1985 Rotary International set every club worldwide a mission to help rid the world of Polio. At that time there were 1000 polio cases a day in 125 countries.
Today the number of cases is down by 99.9% thanks to the hard work of Rotarians worldwide with the support of WHO, UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. For every £1 a Rotary club raises the Gates Foundation gives £2
The result is that nearly 19 million people who would otherwise been paralysed are walking and more than 1.5 million are alive who otherwise would have died.
The colour purple is the mark on each child's hand after receiving vaccination drops given to millions of children each year to ensure this terrible disease never returns.
