Wild Cymru is working to protect one of Europe’s rarest and most threatened butterflies, and you might be surprised to learn how. In a little yard in the Amman Valley, Rob Parry and Vaughn Matthews are taking care of hundreds of tiny, beautiful and precious marsh fritillary butterflies.

Mae Cymru Wyllt yn gweithio i warchod un o löynnod byw prinnaf, a’r un sy’n wynebu’r bygythiad mwyaf, yn Ewrop, ac efallai y byddwch chi’n synnu o ddeall sut. Mewn iard fechan yn Nyffryn Aman, mae Rob Parry a Vaughn Matthews yn gofalu am gannoedd o löynnod byw britheg y gors bach iawn, prydferth a gwerthfawr.

This Swift has just returned to its nest in the Amman Valley, after spending its winter in Africa. Swifts only land to breed, doing everything else in the air. Eating, sleeping, even mating - it all happens on the wing. This pair built their first nest last year, spending all summer making it perfect - and now this bird will dutifully wait for its mate to return before raising their first ever brood. Follow along to see how things work out for this amazing, precious bird.

Yr Uned Ymchwiliadau Natur yw elfen ymchwiliol newydd Cymru Wyllt — sy’n canolbwyntio ar ddatgelu’r methiannau, y pwysau, a’r mannau dall sy’n achosi colli byd natur yng Nghymru.

Oherwydd dyma’r realiti: mae bywyd gwyllt yn dirywio, nid yw’r warchodaeth yn gweithio bob amser, ac yn rhy aml nid yw’r problemau’n cael eu harchwilio.

Yn y ffilm lansio hon, mae newyddiadurwraig ymchwiliol Cymru Wyllt, Helen Callaghan, yn cael sgwrs gyda’r Athro Lynda Warren, Asesydd Interim Diogelu’r Amgylchedd Cymru, i siarad am oruchwyliaeth, atebolrwydd, ac a yw’r systemau sydd yn eu lle wir yn cyflawni dros fyd natur.

Os ydyn ni am newid pethau, mae angen i ni fod yn onest ynglŷn â’r hyn sydd wedi torri, pam mae wedi torri, a sut i’w atgyweirio.

We’re launching something new.
The Nature Investigations Unit is Wild Cymru’s commitment to digging deeper into the issues facing Wales’ wildlife and environment — asking difficult questions, following the evidence, and holding systems to account where needed.

In this first episode, we sit down with Professor Lynda Warren, Interim Environmental Protection Assessor for Wales, to talk about the state of environmental protection, where it’s working, where it’s falling short, and what needs to change.

This conversation sets the tone for what this unit is about: clarity, scrutiny, and a focus on the real pressures facing biodiversity in Wales today.
If we’re serious about protecting nature, we need to understand what’s going wrong — and why.
