Paul Kirner’s Music Palace is aiming to ensure the future for theatre organ music. On Sunday 26th April at 2.30pm we will feature two young, up and coming artists, Jamyma Hanson and Jack Morton alongside internationally acclaimed established artist Michael Wooldridge.
These days there are not many musicians taking up the theatre organ so we are keen to support and encourage those who have discovered what a wonderful and versatile instrument it is. We are very fortunate to be able to present two young and talented performers in concert with one of the UK's busiest theatre and electronic organists, Michael Wooldridge and are proud to encourage new performers which will help preserve the future of the instrument for generations to come.
Our venue is a former Welsh chapel in the Rhondda valleys which has been transformed into “The Music Palace” and is now the scene of a major revival of theatre organs and their music, with public performances and group visits planned for the year. Tucked away in South Street, Ynyshir, near Porth, South Wales CF39 0EG, the treasure trove of stunning theatre pipe organs as well as vintage electronic keyboards and associated memorabilia has to be seen to be believed, and was the brainchild of professional theatre organist Paul Kirner. The building itself is a unique concert venue, containing original fixtures and fittings added from 1930’s cinemas, and is worth a visit in its own right.
Michael Wooldridge started his career in 1980 by winning the Young Theatre Organist of the Year, having being mentored by the renowned theatre organist Bobby Pagan, and has broadcast many many times on BBC Radio 2 with spots on The Organist Entertains and the late Steve Wright's afternoon show. Not only a first class musician, he is also a fully-fledged show producer with variety shows, summer seasons, and pantomimes.
Michael has deputised for the resident organist at the Odeon Leicester Square, where he was thrilled to play for the then HRH Prince of Wales, and has also appeared as organ and piano soloist with the legendary Mantovani Orchestra. It almost goes without saying that he has the most remarkable repertoire and ability to play many different styles of music, and can also accompany silent films which is quite the talent in its own right.
You may be wondering where Michael finds the time, but he is also the main tutor at the Rye Wurlitzer Academy in Sussex where he is pleased to be inspiring new talent on the theatre organ.
Jamyma Hanson and Jack Morton are each looking forward to entertaining our audience as part of the show; Jamyma was one of Michael's students at Rye, and enjoys playing both theatre and electronic organs in concert. Jack recently came second in the Young Theatre Organist of the Year competition, and has been enjoying playing a variety of different theatre organs around the country. We can't wait to hear their wide range of music and fresh talent for the first time at the Music Palace.
Why not come along? You can be assured of a varied and enjoyable programme of music, an afternoon to remember, with a warm welcome from the venue's dedicated volunteers, and you might even get the theatre organ bug! We hope that as many people as possible will attend this event to help protect the future and allow young musicians to hone their craft.
We are also pleased to announce that our Wurlitzer is 100 years old this year! In keeping with our youth themed concert, the young members' representative of The Theatre Organ Club, Damon Cox, will be playing the Wurlitzer as the audience arrives for some additional musical entertainment. Why not have a listen whilst enjoying a drink in our fully licensed bar before the show?
The concert starts at 2.30pm on Sunday 26th April, doors opening at 1.45pm. Tickets are £12, and advance booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment. There is a licensed bar, and tea/coffee available for a small charge.

Something special is happening on Sunday 15th March!

Experience the golden age of cinema like never before! We're hosting a rare screening of the 1926 American silent comedy film The General, starring Buster Keaton and co-directed by Clyde Bruckman. PLUS this iconic film will be accompanied by a live performance on the Plaza's historic Compton organ, offering an authentic glimpse into the cinematic experiences of the 1920s.

Renowned organist Donald MacKenzie, celebrated for his performances at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, will bring the Plaza’s Compton organ to life. Before the main feature, Donald’s performance will showcase the organ’s versatility and rich tones. Throughout the screening, he will provide a continuous improvised accompaniment, echoing the orchestral or piano performances that accompanied silent films a century ago.

The trustees of Paul Kirner’s Theatre Organ Collection, and the whole Music Palace team are profoundly sad to hear of the very sudden death, yesterday morning, of Nigel Ogden who, for over five decades, was at the forefront of the UK theatre organ scene.

From being weekend house organist at the Gaumont, Manchester while still a sixth-former in the early ‘70s he rose to be one of the county’s busiest concert performers and prolific recording artistes. He will, of course, be best remembered as the host of BBC Radio 2’s ‘The Organist Entertains’ for 38 years from 1980 in which role he became an outstanding ambassador for the organ to the general public.

Nigel had so many strings to his bow. He was a regular church organist and, in the 80s, was one of the assistants at Manchester Cathedral. He regularly played mixed programmes of classical and light music at churches, cathedrals and concert halls and continued as organist at his local church in Lancashire following his retirement from broadcasting and touring. He was equally at home on electronic organs, and spent some time working for Boosey & Hawkes alongside Bryan Rodwell, who influenced his playing style - particularly his use of harmony.

Ben and Steve have prepared organs for Nigel’s concerts many times at venues in Barry, Weston-super-Mare, Neath, Clevedon and our own instruments at the Music Palace and for two unforgettable concerts at Folly Farm, re-uniting Nigel with the Gaumont Wurlitzer at which he first appeared in public at the age of 17.

Nigel was a private person, but was unusual as a performer in that he didn’t like to be left alone before a concert - rather he enjoyed having someone to chat to as it calmed his nerves. These were the times he would trot out some of the funniest, and often outrageous, anecdotes about fellow organists that he’d worked alongside, or produced broadcast sessions for!

Even after retiring from regular broadcasting following the axeing of ‘The Organist Entertains’, Nigel was one of the regular presenters of the popular podcast ‘The Organist Encores’ for several years.

He will be sorely missed, but leaves behind a lasting legacy of recorded output which will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Last weekend was full of music and fun at Paul Kirner's Music Palace where the fabulous audiences on Saturday and Sunday were treated to a variety of music in differing styles from four performers, namely Anthony Meads, Ben Snowdon, Gareth Lewis, and Sarah Bryant, all of whom volunteer at the venue. Ant entertained everyone as they arrived, on the piano and Wurlitzer in the bar area, after which Ben kicked things off in a wonderfully lively way on the Compton which soon got the audience into the Christmas spirit. Sarah continued the show in an engagingly festive mood on the Christie and the Eminent. Gareth's selections on the Christie in the second half gave plenty to sing about before Ben returned on the Compton to accompany the audience in some Christmas songs and carols. A grand finale featured all three playing different instruments with a rendition of The Entertainer that had to be heard to be believed! Both shows resulted in standing ovations from the very enthusiastic and responsive audiences.
