It involves creating safe and supportive environments that encourage young people to learn, grow, and develop critical thinking skills while promoting understanding and respect across different cultural and social backgrounds. The ultimate goal of youth work here, in the YM, is to support the development of young people and their ability to contribute positively to society. OUR 3 CORE PILLARS OF WORK

YOUTHFULNESS: This word refers to the process of instilling and nurturing youthfulness in young people by providing them with opportunities to learn, grow, and explore their potential. It involves creating a safe and supportive environment that encourages young people to express themselves, develop critical thinking skills, and build positive relationships with others. COMMUNITYREACH: This word describes the efforts of youth workers to engage and connect with the local community here in Portadown. It involves building bridges between young people and adults, promoting understanding and respect across different cultural and social backgrounds, and developing partnerships that can support the development of young people. EMPOWERYOUTH: This word captures the essence of youth work in the YM which is about empowering young people to take control of their lives and make positive changes in their communities. It involves providing young people with the tools, skills, and resources they need to become active citizens, leaders, and change-makers, and to contribute to society.

An Evening with Jo Berry

Last night, as part of our Volunteer Development Programme, our staff and volunteers took part in a Change Makers workshop with Jo Berry.

Jo shared her inspiring personal story and encouraged us to reflect on the importance of empathy in both our work and our everyday lives. She challenged us to think differently about our views, opinions and practice, prompting meaningful discussion and reflection throughout the evening.

It was a fantastic session filled with great conversations, valuable learning and plenty of thought-provoking challenges.

A huge thank you to Jo for joining us and sharing such a powerful and impactful evening.

✂️ Fresh Cuts, Real Talk ✂️

On Wednesday evening, we were delighted to welcome Elvy from Craft Barbers for a barbering demonstration with some of our male young people.

Elvy shared his personal journey into barbering, talking about how he got to where he is today and offering valuable insight into the industry. He also took the time to answer the young people's questions about pursuing barbering as a career, giving them an opportunity to learn from his experience.

A huge thank you to Elvy for giving up his time to inspire and encourage our young people. We really appreciate you sharing your skills, knowledge, and story with us!

🌟 This Week’s Instalment of Joy Mail 🌟

This week, we want to take the opportunity to celebrate one of our own!

Our amazing Empower 2 Transform (E2T) worker, Megan, recently received the fantastic news that she has successfully completed her Community Youth Work Degree with Ulster University, graduating with First Class Honours. 🎓👏

Over the past four years, Megan has worked incredibly hard to complete her degree part-time while also working full-time. Her dedication, commitment, and passion for youth work have been truly inspiring, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything she has achieved.

We are excited to see what the future holds for Megan and know she will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and our community.

💙 Join us in saying a huge well done and congratulations, Megan! 💙

Last night, two of our young volunteers attended Voices of Young People at YouthAction Belfast as part of the Future Foundations programme, co-facilitated by NICVA.

During the evening, they shared their thoughts on the impact youth work has had on their lives and the wider community. It was a great opportunity to ensure young people's voices were part of these important discussions.

A huge well done to our young volunteers for representing us so well and contributing confidently throughout the evening. We look forward to hearing the outcomes from the event. 💙

TONIGHT WE CONTINUED IN OUR JOURNEY OF CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY TOGETHER.

As part of the evening, we created our own "My Safer Community Pledge" cards, encouraging everyone to reflect on the positive role they can play in building stronger, safer, and more welcoming communities.
It was incredibly inspiring to hear participants share their ideas about how we can make a real difference through simple acts of love, kindness, respect, and understanding. We also took time to celebrate the diversity within the group, with everyone sharing a favourite thing about their home country. Unsurprisingly, the conversation quickly turned to food, with plenty of delicious recommendations being exchanged!
A truly wonderful evening filled with learning, laughter, and meaningful conversations. We're grateful to be part of such an amazing group of young people committed to building a more connected and inclusive community. 🌍❤️

It has been a week that no one could have foreseen or wanted, beginning with a savage attack and escalating into a series of unacceptable retaliatory incidents.
In the midst of it all, we always try to look for moments of light in the darkness; opportunities for hope where there is despair.
Throughout the week, our team has been on the ground, seeking wherever possible to influence those making negative choices and reaching out to those who may be vulnerable, frightened, or at risk.
Late one night, in the middle of rioting and an arson attack on an occupied property, we met Asgar and his family. We chatted briefly about YMCA and told him that if his family ever needed anything, they should not hesitate to contact us.
The next morning, Asgar did call the centre.
What he hadn't told us the night before was that he is the owner of Danny’s Chippy & Kebab.

He wasn't calling to ask for help. He was calling to offer it.

Asgar told us that he would love to support families impacted by the violence and asked if we could make the connections. If we identified families in need, he would cook and donate the food himself.

This week, together we are supporting a small group of local families. One hard-working family had their windows smashed, seemingly because of the colour of their skin. Another case involved a local elderly couple who were injured when their accommodation was targeted, apparently because it was mistakenly believed to be an HMO.

In moments of darkness, acts of kindness, like a free meal bring hope and light. They remind us that while division and difference may make the headlines, compassion and generosity continue to exist quietly within our communities.

On that basis, we are delighted to feature Asgar and Danny's Chippy and Kebab in the very first edition of Joy Mail — a series that seeks to shine a light on the uplifting stories, inspiring people, and acts of goodness that exist across the communities served by YMCA.

Because even in difficult weeks, there are still reasons to hope.

Following appropriate risk assessments, Intermediates will be closed this evening. Due to planned protests and recent social unrest, we have identified a potential risk to the safety of young people travelling to and from the centre.

Our staff remain available and will continue to provide support to communities behind the scenes during this time.

We strongly encourage all young people to make wise choices, avoid any areas where there may be disruption, and prioritise both their own safety and the safety of others this evening.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
