Leonardo Carer Support The Leonardo Trust is an independent charity set up to help people in Dorset who care for a sick or disabled relative or friend, full time, at home.

Our mission is to advocate, campaign, and collaborate with carers to provide the support they need and deserve 🙌🏼

We stand with unpaid carers to make sure they have access to advice, support, and opportunities for empowerment and quality of life ⭐️ The founder of the Leonardo Trust was herself a carer for many years. Understanding the need for short periods of rest, and for the carer to have some

time to themselves, she set up the Trust to provide for the special needs of people who care full-time for a loved one at home, and who cannot afford to have a much-needed break. The Leonardo Trust has an office in Broadstone, where you can pop in for a chat. In the office we also have information about organisations which might also be helpful, and a wide range of different topics. We would also like you to let us know if you have any news or ideas which might be helpful to other carers. Some things the trust may be able to help with include:

- Funds for a short holiday or weekend break for the carer.

- The cost of additional night sitters, to give the carer a good night's rest.

- The cost of replacement care so that the carer may have a regular afternoon or evening free to follow their own interests.

- The trustees will also consider requests for recent ex-carers who are in need of some help as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

- In some circumstances, the cost of a holiday for the carer and the person they care for together.

- The cost of correspondence course, or local evening class fees.

- Membership of a gym or swimming club. The trustees are also very glad to consider what would be of most benefit to you, as the carer. Although the application isn’t fully means tested, the Charity cannot help those who can afford to pay for their own needs. However the Trustees do understand that many people who have a modest amount of savings are often excluded from statutory help, and are very happy to consider requests from people in this kind of situation. They ask that applicants are open with us and explain their needs and why they need help.

We absolutely love seeing the thoughtful ways our carers make a true difference. 🥰

One of our amazing carers designed this beautiful stone and left it at one of our holiday homes at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park 😊 spreading a little positivity, calm and kindness for the next person to find! 🪨✨

It’s such a simple gesture, but the message really says it all:

HELP US MAKE HISTORY FOR YOUNG CARERS! 🙌🏼

Something important is happening and we want you to be part of it! ⭐️

Our local MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, Vikki Slade, is championing a Bill in Parliament calling for a Young Carer Champion in every school in England. 👌🏼 This simple idea could transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of young carers.

📊 56% of schools recorded no young carers on the 2026 school census not because they aren’t there, but because they are often going unidentified 🫣 Young carers are more than twice as likely to be suspended as their peers, and nearly a quarter spend more than 18 months out of education, employment or training!

A Young Carer Champion would be a trained member of staff in every school, able to recognise all young carers, understand the responsibilities they carry and connect them with the support they deserve. ❤️

And we know it works .. schools with Young Carer Champions have seen attendance increase by 10 days a year 📚✨

Now we need Parliament to make this standard across England 🖋️

The Unpaid Carers Action Plan is now LIVE! 🙌🏼

We’re SO pleased to share the launch of the Unpaid Carers Action Plan: Recognise, Refer, Reach, published by the UK Government! ⭐️

The plan sets out a cross-government approach to improving the lives of unpaid carers in England, focusing on three very important areas:

💜 RECOGNISE.. making sure unpaid carers are identified and recognised for the vital role they play.

🤝 REFER.. helping carers access the right information, advice and support at the right time.

🌱 REACH.. supporting unpaid carers to achieve their own goals and aspirations, whether that’s in education, employment, health or even retirement 👍🏼

Unpaid carers make an incredible contribution to our families and communities, but too often their own needs can go unnoticed 😪 This action plan recognises the importance of making sure carers are seen, heard and supported too. 💜

At Leonardo Carer Support, we welcome this commitment to recognising and strengthening support for unpaid carers. We will continue to work alongside carers, communities and partner organisations to ensure carers in Dorset know that they are not alone and support is available ✅

Another wonderful café has opened its doors! 🌿✨

We’re delighted to share with our lovely followers that Forest Holme Hospice Charity, in partnership with Leonardo Carer Support, has opened a third café in Sandbanks at Care South’s Marjorie House. 🏡☕💕

The new café provides a warm and welcoming space for people to come together, enjoy a cuppa, have a chat and connect with others in a warm and supportive environment. 🤗

We’re so proud to be part of this partnership and to help create more opportunities for connection, friendship and support within our local community. 💚

We’re delighted to have supported the Canford Heath Group Practice Carers Group by sponsoring a beautiful cream tea through us and Leonardo Friends 💚

The group is open to carers who are registered with Canford Heath Group Practice, providing a wonderful opportunity for carers to come together, take some time to enjoy some company and have a well-deserved break!! 🌿💕

The event enabled 4 men and 9 ladies to enjoy a delicious afternoon treat and of course, plenty of lovely scones! 😋

Our team here at Leonardo Carer Support had the pleasure of meeting some truly wonderful families and unpaid carers, listening to their experiences, sharing information about the support we offer, and helping to connect people with services that can make a real difference in daily life 😊
