Leonardo Carer Support The Leonardo Trust is an independent charity set up to help people in Dorset who care for a sick or disabled relative or friend, full time, at home.

Our mission is to advocate, campaign, and collaborate with carers to provide the support they need and deserve 🙌🏼

We stand with unpaid carers to make sure they have access to advice, support, and opportunities for empowerment and quality of life ⭐️ The founder of the Leonardo Trust was herself a carer for many years. Understanding the need for short periods of rest, and for the carer to have some

time to themselves, she set up the Trust to provide for the special needs of people who care full-time for a loved one at home, and who cannot afford to have a much-needed break. The Leonardo Trust has an office in Broadstone, where you can pop in for a chat. In the office we also have information about organisations which might also be helpful, and a wide range of different topics. We would also like you to let us know if you have any news or ideas which might be helpful to other carers. Some things the trust may be able to help with include:

- Funds for a short holiday or weekend break for the carer.

- The cost of additional night sitters, to give the carer a good night's rest.

- The cost of replacement care so that the carer may have a regular afternoon or evening free to follow their own interests.

- The trustees will also consider requests for recent ex-carers who are in need of some help as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

- In some circumstances, the cost of a holiday for the carer and the person they care for together.

- The cost of correspondence course, or local evening class fees.

- Membership of a gym or swimming club. The trustees are also very glad to consider what would be of most benefit to you, as the carer. Although the application isn’t fully means tested, the Charity cannot help those who can afford to pay for their own needs. However the Trustees do understand that many people who have a modest amount of savings are often excluded from statutory help, and are very happy to consider requests from people in this kind of situation. They ask that applicants are open with us and explain their needs and why they need help.

💙 A huge thank you to Rachel Raffety, who runs the Carers Group at Canford Heath, for hosting a fantastic community event supporting local carers and residents 👏✨

🎁 Leonardo Carer Support was pleased to provide goodie bags to be handed out to carers attending the event, alongside information leaflets for the Canford Heath GP and the Leonardo Friends Carers Group, helping connect people with ongoing support available in the community 🤝

🩺 The event offered a wide range of valuable health information and services, including:
💓 Blood pressure and cholesterol checks
🧠 Mental health information
🎗️ Cancer screening advice
🩸 Diabetes support
💙 Carers information
🌱 Lifestyle support

✨ We are honoured to officially welcome His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset, Mr Michael Dooley LVO FRCOG Hon. DSc as Patron of Leonardo Carer Support. ✨

Mr Dooley was appointed His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset in September 2024 and serves as The King’s personal representative in Dorset. Throughout his distinguished career in medicine and public service, he has been a passionate advocate for community wellbeing, inclusion, voluntary service, and supporting those facing social challenges across the county. 💙

On 28 April, Leonardo Carer Support proudly hosted a special celebration at our offices to mark this wonderful occasion. It was a fantastic event attended by carers, charity partners, trustees, ambassadors, and our dedicated staff team as we celebrated the beginning of this meaningful partnership. 🌟

In the words of Mr Michael Dooley:

“It is a great privilege to become Patron of Leonardo Carer Support. Unpaid carers are the quiet pillars of our communities offering love, dignity, and strength often behind the scenes. This remarkable charity ensures carers across Dorset feel recognised, supported and never alone.
