Join us in wishing a very happy 91st birthday to His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent 💙

The Duke has been our President since 1969 and has visited almost every lifeboat station during His Royal Highness’ 57-year tenure.

This year, The Duke joined us in celebrating our incredible lifeguards who have been keeping our seasides safer for 25 years. To recognise their incredible commitment to lifesaving, a group of past and present lifeguards joined His Royal Highness at Kensington Palace to celebrate Lifeguard Appreciation Day.

The volunteers and staff at the RNLI send their best wishes and all our thanks for The Duke’s unwavering commitment to saving lives at sea.

Rips are strong currents that can quickly drag you into deeper water.

Rip currents are difficult to spot. They can look like a channel of flat, darker water, surrounded by choppy, churning water, just like the image below.

If you feel like you’re being pulled by a rip current, swim or paddle parallel to the shore, not against the current. Or, Float to Live until help arrives.

If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Whitby RNLI launched their inshore lifeboat earlier today after a vehicle entered the water in Whitby harbour.

The volunteer crew were paged at 11.50am and attended the incident alongside police, ambulance, fire and coastguard crews from Whitby.

The crew assisted in providing medical assistance to the casualty who was transferred to a waiting ambulance.
