Last week, members of the AWT team attended the IIEM in Guernsey, held from 30th September to 1st October.
IIEM takes place annually. It brings together government bodies, environmental organisations and individuals from across the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, France and the UK to share knowledge, learn from one another and think collectively about the future of our natural environment.
This yearโs theme, โNature for the Next Generationโ, focused on inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders and ensuring our natural environment is protected and enhanced for future generations to enjoy. The conference also promotes collaboration, innovation, and practical conservation action across the islands.
๐ The programme included a wide range of talks, covering topics such as seabird restoration, building partnerships, shrew and dolphin research ๐ฌ, community engagement and fundraising, citizen science in Brittany and Sark, future-proofing wetland reserves in Jersey, and temperate rainforests ๐ณ and natural heritage in the Isle of Man ๐. Participants also had the opportunity to visit Lihou as part of a field trip.
The AWT team contributed to the meeting by presenting on the Alderney State of Nature Project, as well as sharing a poster on Wilder Learning and a joint-organisation poster on the Virtual Reality Project.
๐ This year also included a special Youth Environment Meeting on 2nd October, bringing together sixth form students to share their understanding of the environment and their perspectives on environmental issues. Itโs a great initiative by Guernsey Nature Commission , giving young people a platform to share their ideas and help shape the conversation about the future of our environment.
Next year, itโs Alderneyโs turn! ๐
AWT will host Inter-Island Environment Meeting in September 2027. We're looking forward to this opportunity to share, learn and work with others for the benefit of nature and people.
