🎉 It’s Volunteers' Week! 🎉
The AWT is able to do what it does today thanks to the dedication and support of volunteers in a wide variety of roles: conservation volunteers, wildlife recorders, front desk supporters, facility maintenance volunteers, fundraisers, orchard carers, and board members.

These photos show only a small number of the volunteers we are incredibly grateful to work alongside.

Happy Volunteers' Week, and thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do! 💚

🌟 This week’s sightings board is up!

🦋 The highlight of the week is a Broom moth, recorded in a moth trap at Longis Road Garden last Saturday. This species is considered one of Alderney’s key moth species. The Broom moth flies between May and July, and its caterpillars feed on broom, bracken, and a variety of other plants.

A Honey Buzzard was spotted over the Houmet Herbé path on 26th May by visitors to the island. A Nightjar was heard near the Alderney Community Woodland on 28th May, as reported by Tony Fiore, a local wildlife photographer.

💚 Alderney’s landscapes are now becoming carpeted with flowers across the coastal cliffs and Commons. You can visit Longis Common to see Dodder and Bird’s-foot Trefoil, the South Cliffs for Sea Pinks, and Braye Dunes for Pyramidal Orchids.

📒 If you spot wildlife on Alderney, please submit your wildlife sightings to iRecord, iNaturalist or the Alderney Biodiversity Centre website. By doing so, you're contributing to the understanding of the island's nature and biodiversity.

The Hut is open 🎉

We had a wonderful time celebrating on Saturday with so many of you 🥰

It is a huge testament to Alderney’s community for coming together to raise the much needed repair funds, ensuring this community venue could be saved for another generation. Five years of fundraising. Two years of restoration and building works. The resilience, perseverance and collaboration of Alderney's community is incredible. Together, we made it! 💪🏻

We would like to extend thanks to those who also supported the success of the day;

Rosie at Braye Studio, Caroline Gauvain and Alderney Laser Crafts for contributing their fantastic design skills for a fitting new logo and sign.

To Titan Wealth CI for generously sponsoring such an important community day.

Alderney Horticultural Society for bringing more colour and life to the outside space and connecting young people to the art of gardening.

Alderney Island Band and Age Against the Machine for bringing the atmosphere with their brilliant performances.

Thanks to Zoe at Alderney Children's Centre, Annabelle at Casimer Creations, Lou Collings and AWT Education Officer Thanh for connecting children and families to nature.

To Hatters at the Harbour - Alderney, Alderney Potatoes, Saye Beach Camping and the AWT team for feeding everyone delicious local food.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Scouts for your support from the start, but also for travelling over and celebrating this huge achievement with us.

To the Treasurer of the original Alderney Scouts, Alison Crawford for your ongoing commitment and time to ensure the communities needs and wants were actioned, benefiting the whole island.

And to all 130+ of you who attended the opening 🙏🏻States of Alderney members, local families, friends, AWT supporters, 1st Alderney Scout Group, and visitors. We hope you all had a wonderful time and can see the endless opportunities this community venue holds.

Whether you have a fundraising initiative, charity event, family celebration or big idea you would like to organise, The Hut could be the perfect place. With a lovely green space adjacent, and the best beaches on the island just footsteps away, Saye is waiting to welcome you.

To everyone who made this happen. Thank you.

💚 French student study trip

Last week, we were pleased to support around 60 students from Millet High School (Cherbourg) during their study trip to Alderney. The students explored different aspects of Alderney’s history, including the island’s war years.

The group visited the Hammond Memorial and walked past the Odeon, the Roman Fort, and the Hospital Bunker. In the afternoon, the students visited the Homecoming Woodland at York Hill and paid tribute to the Homecomers.

Alongside sharing information about Alderney’s natural history, we are also happy to support school groups and other visitors with field trips around the island.

Alderney has a great deal to offer, from wildlife and nature to history and heritage walks.

💧 PUT OUT WATER FOR WILDLIFE 💧

With temperatures rising, many of us are already feeling the heat after just a few minutes in the sun, and wildlife is feeling it too.

Putting out fresh water in your garden can make a huge difference to birds, hedgehogs, insects, and other wildlife during hot weather. Even a shallow dish of clean water can become a lifeline.

🐦 For birds
If you put out drinking saucers/bird baths for birds, please change the water daily and clean containers weekly to help reduce the risk of contamination and bacterial growth.

Please place water saucers near a hedge or bush so that birds can quickly find shelter if a predator is nearby.

🦔 For hedgehogs and other ground-dwelling animals:
Make sure the water source is shallow and has rough-textured edges so animals can safely climb in and out.

A small act of kindness can go a long way for local wildlife this summer. 🌿

🌟 This week’s sightings board is up!

🦋 The highlight of the week is the record of a Ruddy Carpet moth from a Moth Trap Opening in Essex Farm on 24th May.

This is an uncommon species, found locally in the southern parts of England and Wales. It occupies open woodland, scrubland, downland and sea-cliffs, and flies mainly in June and July. The larvae feed mainly on bedstraw

💚 Botanically speaking, lots of flowers including Honeysuckle, Pyramidal Orchid and Bee Orchid have been spotted across the island.

🏊 Some jellyfish have been spotted in different bays. Please avoid them and refrain from handling them, even after they have washed ashore. Some jellyfish, such as the blue lion’s mane, can give you a powerful sting.

⭐ Did you know that you can record species that you spot with iNaturalist or iRecord recording applications? You can also submit your sightings to the Alderney Biodiversity Centre via its website!

If you'd like to learn to identify species, ObsIdentify is a good app that you can try.

🌻 PictureThis is quite good at identifying plant species.

🐦 Merlin Bird ID helps you to ID the birds via their songs. However, you may need to double check the ID as sometimes what the apps said may not be correct.

🦈 If you love marine life and often find mermaid’s purses, you can download the Shark Trust’s app to record shark and ray egg cases.

If you need any support using the apps mentioned above, please feel free to drop into the office and chat with a member of staff. By recording wildlife, you're contributing to the understanding of biodiversity of Alderney.
