At Millie College, our Future Pathways approach helps students prepare for adulthood and employment through a clear, progressive journey from exploration to real-world experience.
Students have time to discover their strengths, develop practical life and employability skills, and apply them in increasingly authentic work environments. Students gain a meaningful pathway towards greater independence, further education, volunteering or employment, while employers and community partners can recognise students’ potential and help create inclusive routes into the workplace through collaboration with the college staff.
🌱 YEAR 1 | EXPLORE & ENGAGE
Through the students journey, they experience a broad range of Enterprise areas and practical learning environments, helping them discover what interests and motivates them.
They begin to recognise:
⭐ What they enjoy
⭐ Where their strengths lie
⭐ Which environments suit them
⭐ What motivates and engages them
⭐ Which skills they would like to develop
The emphasis is on experience, participation and discovery.
🌿 YEAR 2 | DEVELOP & FOCUS
Students develop their interests further, focusing on Enterprise areas they particularly enjoy or show aptitude for. this progress is monitored closely each session by Enterprise staff and reported through progress surveys alongside the student.
Through sustained experiences and increasing responsibility, they build skills, confidence and independence. This provides an important bridge between exploring an activity and understanding workplace expectations.
💼 YEAR 3 | EXPERIENCE THE WORLD OF WORK
By Year 3, the focus shifts towards work-related learning and applying skills in real working environments, both on and off site, where applicable to that individual student.
Our on-site Enterprise provision includes:
☕ Faith’s Pantry & Café – hospitality, retail, catering and customer-facing experience.
🍴 Catering & Commercial Production – producing, preparing, packaging and presenting products for resale.
🎨 Creative Arts & Commercial Production – taking ideas through design, production, quality checking and preparation for retail.
🌱 Student Horticulture Technician opportunities – developing practical skills, workplace routines and increased responsibility within Cultivate.
🥚 Egg-spressions - students collect eggs from our rescue chickens, follow procedures for food safety including labelling and dating eggs and adding in a pun or joke along the way to enhance the customers experience.
Students can then begin transferring these skills beyond the familiar college environment.
🤝 FROM COLLEGE TO THE COMMUNITY
Annabelle and Katrina have developed our Future Pathways programme and external partnership network, creating meaningful community experiences and work placements.
This includes projects such as our work at Shapwick and Studland beach with the National Trust/National Trust Studland Bay, alongside external placements matched to students’ interests, abilities and aspirations with other partners such as Margaret Green Animal Rescue.
🛍️ OUR OWN OFF-SITE WORKPLACE
Students can also experience a genuine external retail environment through Millie’s Gifts & Garden at The Courtyard Craft Centre, Lytchett Minster.
Established by Annabelle and Katrina, the shop extends our Enterprise curriculum beyond the college site. It enables students to see how Enterprise products move into a real retail setting while developing skills in merchandising, presentation, stock management, customer service and workplace routines.
🏫 BUILDING PATHWAYS INTO MILLIE TOO
Annabelle and Katrina started representing Millie College at schools and Alternative Provision transition events, meeting young people, families and professionals while showcasing our Enterprise curriculum and approach to preparation for adulthood. This was vital to growing our offer as the college only began in September 2022.
Future Pathways is not simply about where students go after Millie. It creates a progressive journey throughout their time with us and we are delighted to play a part in each students life journey.
