The history of the Mayor of Poole dates back to the Charter of Longspee 1248 and the first recorded Mayor of Poole was Thomas Canawey in 1408. The office of Sheriff in Poole was created in 1568 by Queen Elizabeth I, which made Poole a County Corporate, in deed and name, distinct and separate from the County of Dorset

What a wonderful year! Being the 777th Mayor of Poole has been an absolute privilege. Poole is more than just a historic town. Cllr. Karen Rampton, beat the land bounds of the town. The Mayor cycled the boundary of the town (33 miles) with 30 others and met the Sheriff and dignitaries from neighbouring towns at Upton Country Park, Canford Suspension Bridge and Branksome Dene beach. There was then a Civic Parade and Piepowder Court on Poole Quay. The Mayor is pictured with 1st Hamworthy Scouts at the Poole/Upton boundary post and Cllr. George Farquhar, Deputy Mayor of Bournemouth.

The Mayor of Poole laid a wreath in memory of Stephen Ford, an 18 year old from Poole who made the ultimate sacrifice when his ship, HMS Ardent, was sunk in the Falklands War. You can find out more about him here: https://hmsardent.org/ardlines-news/remembrance-2022-stephen-ford-poole It was a beautiful morning on Constitution Hill and the commemoration attended by local Veterans groups was very moving. The picture was taken after the commemoration when the parade had been dismissed.

The 2026 International Paint Poole Regatta is this weekend: https://pooleregatta.co.uk. The Mayor of Poole, Cllr. Mark Howell, and Chair of BCP Council, Cllr. Lesley Dedman, are pictured with Keith Lovett, a member of the organising committee, at the launch event at the Royal Motor Yacht Club with its spectacular view over Poole Harbour. The Mayor is also pictured with Peter Burt, a former Commodore of the RMYC and the key person responsible for returning the Canford Cup to Poole. To be fought for this weekend, this is the oldest yachting trophy in the world, dating from 1849, two years before The Americas Cup was founded.

Last month the annual Civic Service and Mayoral Awards took place in St James' Church Poole. This event celebrated Poole’s community and particularly those volunteering within it or inspiring others in their working roles. Cllr Mark Howell, the Mayor of Poole, awarded certificates marked with the town’s 13th century seal to Mirella Thomas of Elizabeth House care home, Jo Keeling (The Sheriff’s nomination) for work in her community of Talbot Woods), Dave and Pauline Balmer and Kay Salter for organising the Poole Disability Open Competition in gymnastics, Jill Bailey (The Mayor’s Chaplain’s nomination) for volunteering in various organisations including the RLSS Poole, and Gail Nuttall and Gina Wilcox for their lifetime contributions to Poole including for Poole Swimming Club and the Poole Cherbourg Twinning Association respectively.

Well done to the Poole Sea Cadets band. Very much appreciated.
