Helping preserve the unique colliery winding engine house at Hetty Pit

The winding engine house contains a steam winding engine built by Barker ana Cope of Kidsgrove in 1875 which is the oldest of its type in the UK in working order. The building and its adjacent steel headgear stand alongside the main Rhondda road near Hopkinstown, and is a striking reminder of the industry that once dominated

these valleys. The trust is currently trying to refurbish the headgear and ensure its continued survival as one of the very few remaining colliery headgears in South Wales

What a great day!

The engine is officially running for the first time this year. Our resident driver, Adrian, has been busy training two of our newest volunteers to get them ready for our upcoming open days.

We look forward to welcoming you soon to experience the engine firsthand, including a special guided tour of the site by former coal mining electrician, Howell Thomas who can share stories and tails of the Welsh coal face.

On 21st October 1966, at 9:13 a.m; on the final day of term, in the quiet Welsh village of Aberfan, a tragedy struck which changed the village forever.

Nearly half of the month’s rainfall had occurred in the third week of October. This heavy rain caused the notorious coal tip No. 7 to become particularly waterlogged and unstable. On that fateful morning, after years of concerns and warnings about the condition of the coal tips by local residents to the NCB, coal tip No. 7 finally slid, engulfing a farmhouse before coming to rest at Pantglas Junior School, killing 116 children and 28 adults.
