A few days on a SSSI near Pencoed. Some gate repairs and installation (no pics 🤦‍♂️). Also clearing back some of the overhanging branches on fences and replacing the worst posts with new ones. I love Blackthorn and Holly 🤬
Loads of butterflies around and serenaded by the gorgeous bird songs all day 😊
Lots of Heath spotted Orchids waiting to flower.

170m of post and rail fence, in 2 separate areas, at Pwll Waun Cynon Reserve in Mountain Ash for WTSWW.
The second section up the top end was very hard going. Each hole we dug was full of stones and rocks and ended up twice as wide as needed 🥵🤦‍♂️
Was also visited briefly by this hedgehog who was strangely out in daylight

🦋 Crowdfunder Complete – Thank You! 🌼

Our 'Save the Small Blue at Cwm Tips' Crowdfunder has now closed, and thanks to your incredible support we raised an amazing £2,446.83!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, shared the campaign, and offered to help. Because of you, we can now begin restoring the grasslands at Cwm Tips to their former glory by tackling invasive Cotoneaster that is smothering wildflowers and important habitat for the Small Blue butterfly and other special wildlife.

The work already carried out by Greenwise has opened up areas of grassland that had become shaded by dense gorse, and the difference is already clear.

From April, we’ll be organising volunteer work parties to start cutting back the low-growing Cotoneaster — and we’d love your help. We’ll be sharing several dates soon if you’d like to get involved.

We’ll also be running free guided nature and heritage walks from May, giving you the chance to explore the site and see the wildlife that makes it so special.

Keep an eye on our socials for updates, or join our mailing list to stay in touch.

Thank you again for helping us give nature a helping hand at Cwm Tips. 💚

Two weeks of scrub clearance for NRW, mainly Willow, on Llantrisant Common SSSI. Trees/scrub have been encroaching onto the peatland over the years. Removing them will open up the area, preventing the drying effect of the trees on the peatland and encourage more grazing.
Also recovering more of the grassland will hopefully also benefit the endangered Marsh Fritillary butterflies that have been reintroduced to the Common.

2 weeks of bramble strimming done at Crymlyn Bog NNR. No work pics just a birthday selfie and these lovely, probably Scarlet Elf cups and some vivid Cobalt crust fungus on bramble from last year.
On to Llantrisant Common next for some scrub clearance works.

Nice to be back on Merthyr Mawr clearing Sea Buckthorn, it’s where I started about 30 years ago 🙀
Clearing 2 areas, one at the bottom of what’s known as the Big Dipper and the 2nd further up on the right.
It burns really well once it’s up and going.
Also a bit of fungus and wildlife we encountered 😊

Back down to Crymlyn Bog now but on the drier sections, clearing bramble and gorse.

🦋💙 Save the Small Blue at Cwm Tips – Crowdfunder launched today! 💙🦋

Today we’re launching our ‘Save the Small Blue at Cwm Tips’ Crowdfunder, and we’d love your support.

Cwm Tips, near Beddau, is one of the most important wildlife sites in the South Wales Valleys. It supports over 600 species of invertebrates, including more than 50 species of bees, rare millipedes, orchids, and threatened butterflies. Among the most special is the Small Blue butterfly - our smallest butterfly species, and one of the few inland populations in the region.

However, the flower-rich grasslands that this butterfly depends on have declined over the past decade due to scrub encroachment and invasive species, particularly Cotoneaster. Without action, vital habitat - including the Kidney Vetch the Small Blue needs to survive - will continue to be lost.

If we reach our target, this crowdfunder will enable us to:

🌼 Restore flower-rich grassland
✂️ Tackle invasive species and scrub
🦋 Safeguard habitat for the Small Blue and other rare wildlife
🌿 Protect a site that matters for both nature and the local community

Even a small donation will make a real difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing the page is just as valuable and helps spread the word.

👉 Support the crowdfunder here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-the-small-blue-at-cwm-tips

Not able to donate via Crowdfunder? Get in touch with us and we’ll help you find another way to support the project.

Together, we can make sure the Small Blue - and the special wildlife of Cwm Tips - has a future. 💚

Another 5 and a half weeks of scrub notching done. This time at Crymlyn Bog NNR for LIFEquake. Been very wet there at times but nice to finish the last 2 days with some dry weather.

Looking forward to putting the chest waders away and working on dry land in the New Year, lovely dry sand at Merthyr Mawr 😎

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to everyone 🎄🎅

Another chunk of notch injection of invasive scrub done at Pant y Sais Bog, Jersey Marine for NRW. Was very wet there this year. The last 2 weeks spent in chest waders after going in over the thigh waders 🤦‍♂️
Constantly hearing a Water Rail and Cetti’s Warblers but never seeing them. Uncovered 4 old Harvest mice nests. Also came across some old disused rails up on an embankment while trying to find a dryer route in.

Over to Crymlyn Bog next for another 5-6 weeks of the same for LIFEquake. 😩😊
