Tony and Jill from Port Talbot recently flew to Phoenix, Arizona to represent Parkinson’s UK Cymru at the World Parkinson’s Congress.

Tony says: “On the first day, crowds of people swarmed the building looking for friends, talks and sessions to attend. There were three floors of well structured events. We entered the main exhibit hall to be greeted by the buzz of hundreds of people talking. Jill enjoyed reflexology and singing sessions, while I stayed on the Parkinson’s UK stand chatting, answering questions and showing off some of my poetry.”

Tony and Jill were busy throughout their time in Phoenix, with Tony adding: “There was so much going on. We enjoyed Taiko drumming, a networking dinner, fantastic speakers and the poster walk - rows of posters by various companies with staff ready to talk about their product. These range from walking aids, stand up desks, to stem cell treatment. So good to see so much being done for the Parkinson’s community across the world.”

Reflecting on their trip, Jill adds: "The emphasis given to care givers of those living with Parkinson's was amazing. I felt comforted that we were encouraged to join all the talks and activities."

“We feel honoured and humbled to have been selected to represent Parkinson’s UK Cymru,” Tony says. “We’re so grateful for a life changing experience.”

Yn ddiweddar, aeth Tony a Jill o Bort Talbot i Phoenix, Arizona i gynrychioli Parkinson’s UK Cymru yng Nghyngres Parkinson’s y Byd.

Dywedodd Tony: “Ar y diwrnod cyntaf, heidiodd torfeydd o bobl i’r adeilad yn chwilio am ffrindiau, sgyrsiau a sesiynau i fynychu. Roedd tair llawr o ddigwyddiadau wedi’u strwythuro’n dda. Aethom i mewn i’r brif neuadd arddangos i gael ein cyfarch gan sŵn cannoedd o bobl yn siarad. Mwynhaodd Jill sesiynau reflexoleg a chanu, tra arhosais i ar stondin Parkinson’s UK yn sgwrsio, yn ateb cwestiynau ac yn dangos rhywfaint o fy marddoniaeth.”

Roedd Tony a Jill yn brysur drwy gydol eu hamser yn Phoenix, gyda Tony yn ychwanegu: “Roedd cymaint yn digwydd. Fe wnaethon ni fwynhau drymio Taiko, cinio rhwydweithio, siaradwyr gwych a’r daith bosteri - rhesi o bosteri gan wahanol gwmnïau gyda staff yn barod i siarad am eu cynnyrch. Mae’r rhain yn amrywio o gymhorthion cerdded, desgiau sefyll, i driniaeth celloedd bonyn. Mor dda gweld cymaint yn cael ei wneud ar gyfer y gymuned Parkinson’s ledled y byd.”

Wrth fyfyrio ar eu taith, mae Jill yn ychwanegu: "Roedd y pwyslais a roddir i ofalwyr y rhai sy’n byw gyda Parkinson’s yn anhygoel. Roeddwn i'n teimlo'n braf ein bod ni wedi cael ein hannog i ymuno â'r holl sgyrsiau a gweithgareddau."

“Rydym ni'n teimlo'r anrhydedd ein bod ni wedi cael ein dewis i gynrychioli Parkinson's UK Cymru,” meddai Tony. “Rydym ni mor ddiolchgar am brofiad sydd wedi newid ein bywydau.”

This Carers Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the amazing carers across Wales who are supporting the Parkinson’s community.

Carole from Colwyn Bay has been with her husband John for nearly 53 years. John was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2022. Carole believes one of the best things that happened after John’s diagnosis was both of them being introduced to the local Parkinson's UK Cymru support group.

She says: “After being involved with the group for a while, I became a volunteer. I joined the existing session for carers that meets separately. We all have to reassure our partners or relatives that we are not talking behind their back or gossiping in the carers meeting. We are constructively dealing with our own issues and finding ways to make all our lives easier. We remind each other that we are doing the best we can. Parkinson’s impacts everyone differently, so every carer’s journey will also be unique. And we all respect that."

Carole says their daily lives have changed since John’s diagnosis but they always try to find a way around problems instead of letting Parkinson’s halt their activities: “I’m sure everyone in a caring role will describe themselves and their identity in a different way. While I do care for John, I wouldn’t often use the term ‘carer’ to describe myself. I focus on maintaining John's independence as much as possible, such as supporting him to sort his own medication or encouraging him to stay active. I see this as being motivational or simply an extension of what I have always done. It’s an evolution of our relationship due to life events.”

Thank you Carole for all that you do and for sharing your story 💙

Yn ystod Wythnos Gofalwyr, rydym yn taflu goleuni ar y gofalwyr anhygoel ledled Cymru sy'n cefnogi'r gymuned Parkinson's.

Mae Carole o Fae Colwyn wedi bod gyda'i gŵr John ers bron i 53 mlynedd. Cafodd John ddiagnosis o Parkinson's yn 2022. Mae Carole yn credu mai un o'r pethau gorau a ddigwyddodd ar ôl diagnosis John oedd cyflwyno'r ddau ohonynt i grŵp cymorth lleol Parkinson's UK Cymru.

Mae hi'n dweud: “Ar ôl bod yn rhan o'r grŵp am gyfnod, des i'n wirfoddolwr. Ymunais â'r sesiwn bresennol ar gyfer gofalwyr sy'n cyfarfod ar wahân. Mae'n rhaid i ni i gyd sicrhau ein partneriaid neu berthnasau nad ydym yn siarad y tu ôl i'w cefn nac yn clebran yn y cyfarfod gofalwyr. Rydym yn delio'n â'n problemau ein hunain ac yn dod o hyd i ffyrdd o wneud ein bywydau i gyd yn haws. Rydym yn atgoffa ein gilydd fod pawb yn gwneud eu gorau. Mae Parkinson's yn effeithio ar bawb yn wahanol, felly bydd siwrnai pob gofalwr hefyd yn unigryw. Ac rydym i gyd yn parchu hynny."

Dywed Carole fod eu bywyd bob dydd wedi newid ers diagnosis John ond maen nhw bob amser yn ceisio dod o hyd i ffyrdd o amgylch problemau yn lle gadael i Parkinson's eu rhwystro: “Rwy’n siŵr fod pawb mewn rôl ofalu yn disgrifio eu hunain a’u hunaniaeth mewn ffordd wahanol. Er fy mod i’n gofalu am John, ni fyddwn yn aml yn defnyddio’r term ‘gofalwr’ i ddisgrifio fy hun. Rwy’n canolbwyntio ar gynnal annibyniaeth John gymaint â phosibl, fel ei gefnogi i drefnu ei feddyginiaeth ei hun neu ei annog i aros yn actif. Rwy’n gweld hyn fel rhywbeth ysgogol neu’n syml fel estyniad o’r hyn rydw i wedi’i wneud erioed. Mae’n esblygiad o’n perthynas oherwydd digwyddiadau bywyd.”

Diolch Carole am bopeth rydych chi’n ei wneud ac am rannu eich stori 💙

During Carers Week, we’re recognising the incredible contribution carers make for people living with Parkinson’s in Wales.

Mayvis from Tredegar cares for her husband Ken who lives with Parkinson’s. Mayvis knows very well about the challenges of life with Parkinson’s because she has also been diagnosed with the condition, as did her late mam.

Mayvis says: “I don’t think people realise how much we do as carers. Ken and I have spoken about respite, but it’s not something he wants and I’m not happy to push for it. We’ve been together 63 years and we don’t like to be apart. The only times we've been apart are when we’ve been in the hospital. I’m also restricted now, as we can’t leave Ken alone. He falls too easily. We have to ensure someone can sit with him at all times. But I don’t hold any resentment, it’s just the way it is."

As Mayvis also tries to manage her own health, the challenges of being a carer are becoming more prominent: “It’s getting harder and I have many more symptoms now. We do have carers coming in to help Ken with showering and dressing due to my bad back. But the mental part has been getting more difficult. I’ve always prided myself on my patience but it can sometimes wear thin. It takes so long for Ken to eat a meal and that can be frustrating. So the mental strain can be quite heavy."

Despite the challenges, Mayvis and Ken are always trying to keep positive: “We talk and that’s a big help. Open conversation and good communication are so important when you’re in a situation like ours. Parkinson’s really has changed our lives. It has affected us greatly. But we’re lucky that we’re not in pain. We have a lot to be grateful for.”

Thank you, Mayvis 💙

*********

Yn ystod Wythnos Gofalwyr, rydym yn cydnabod y cyfraniad anhygoel y mae gofalwyr yn ei wneud i bobl sy'n byw gyda Parkinson's yng Nghymru.

Mae Mayvis o Dredegar yn gofalu am ei gŵr Ken sy'n byw gyda Parkinson's. Mae Mayvis yn gwybod yn dda iawn am heriau bywyd gyda Parkinson's oherwydd ei bod hi hefyd wedi cael diagnosis o'r cyflwr, fel y gwnaeth ei diweddar fam.

Dywed Mayvis: “Dydw i ddim yn credu bod pobl yn sylweddoli faint rydyn ni'n ei wneud fel gofalwyr. Mae Ken a minnau wedi siarad am seibiant, ond nid yw'n rhywbeth y mae e ei eisiau ac nid wyf yn hapus i wthio amdano. Rydym wedi bod gyda'n gilydd am 63 mlynedd ac nid ydym yn hoffi bod ar wahân. Yr unig adegau rydyn ni wedi bod ar wahân yw pan rydyn ni wedi bod yn yr ysbyty. Rwyf hefyd wedi fy nghyfyngu nawr, gan na allwn adael Ken ar ei ben ei hun. Mae'n cwympo'n rhy hawdd. Mae'n rhaid i ni sicrhau y gall rhywun eistedd gydag ef bob amser. Ond nid wyf yn dal unrhyw ddrwgdeimlad, dyna sut mae hi."

Wrth i Mayvis hefyd geisio rheoli ei hiechyd ei hun, mae heriau bod yn ofalwr yn dod yn fwy amlwg: “Mae'n mynd yn anoddach ac mae gen i lawer mwy o symptomau nawr. Mae gennym ni ofalwyr yn dod i mewn i helpu Ken gyda chawod a gwisgo oherwydd fy nghefn drwg. Ond mae'r rhan feddyliol wedi bod yn mynd yn anoddach. Rwyf bob amser wedi ymfalchïo yn fy amynedd ond gall fod yn heriol weithiau. Mae'n cymryd cymaint o amser i Ken fwyta pryd o fwyd a gall hynny fod yn rhwystredig. Felly gall y straen meddyliol fod yn eithaf trwm."

Er gwaethaf yr heriau, mae Mayvis a Ken bob amser yn ceisio cadw'n bositif: “Rydym yn siarad ac mae hynny'n gymorth mawr. Mae sgwrs agored a chyfathrebu da mor bwysig pan fyddwch chi mewn sefyllfa fel ein un ni. Mae Parkinson's wedi newid ein bywydau mewn gwirionedd. Mae wedi effeithio'n fawr arnom ni. Ond rydym yn lwcus nad ydym mewn poen. Mae gennym lawer i fod yn ddiolchgar amdano.”

Diolch, Mayvis 💙

As Volunteers’ Week is drawing to a close, today we’re putting the spotlight on Diane from Kidwelly in South Wales.

She says: “I started volunteering for Parkinson’s UK, especially in connection with research, after I was diagnosed with Parkinson's over ten years ago. I wanted to know everything about the condition and I looked at all the different ways I could get involved.”

Diane has volunteered for Parkinson’s research projects for many years through the Parkinson’s UK Research Support Network. She’s completed surveys, sat on advisory boards and contributed to various online meetings.

She adds: “I’m also a Lay Grant Reviewer for the charity. This involves reading and commenting on research grant applications that come to Parkinson’s UK from the perspective of someone living with the condition. I consider whether the project will help with day-to-day life or have a positive long-term impact. I find this work very satisfying but challenging as you’re not just looking at it personally but for the whole Parkinson’s community. This is my way of fighting Parkinson’s and hopefully making a small difference."

Diane highly recommends volunteering to others: “I would say start small and gain confidence. The best thing about volunteering in Parkinson’s research is gaining knowledge, information and understanding. Researchers need people with Parkinson’s. Without research there will be no progress in slowing the development of Parkinson’s or finding a cure."

Thank you, Diane, for your amazing contribution 💙

************

Wrth i Wythnos y Gwirfoddolwyr ddod i ben, heddiw rydym yn rhoi sylw i Diane o Gydweli yn Ne Cymru.

Dywedodd hi: “Dechreuais wirfoddoli i Parkinson’s UK, yn enwedig mewn cysylltiad ag ymchwil, ar ôl i mi gael diagnosis o Parkinson’s dros ddeng mlynedd yn ôl. Roeddwn i eisiau gwybod popeth am y cyflwr ac edrychais ar yr holl wahanol ffyrdd y gallwn gymryd rhan.”

Mae Diane wedi gwirfoddoli ar gyfer prosiectau ymchwil Parkinson’s ers blynyddoedd lawer trwy Rwydwaith Cymorth Ymchwil Parkinson’s UK. Mae hi wedi cwblhau arolygon, wedi eistedd ar fyrddau cynghori ac wedi cyfrannu at wahanol gyfarfodydd ar-lein.

Mae hi'n ychwanegu: “Rwyf hefyd yn Adolygydd Grantiau Lleyg i’r elusen. Mae hyn yn cynnwys darllen a rhoi sylwadau ar geisiadau am grantiau ymchwil sy’n dod i Parkinson’s UK o safbwynt rhywun sy’n byw gyda’r cyflwr. Rwy’n ystyried a fydd y prosiect yn helpu gyda bywyd bob dydd neu’n cael effaith hirdymor gadarnhaol. Rwy’n gweld y gwaith hwn yn foddhaol iawn ond yn heriol gan nad ydych chi’n edrych arno’n bersonol yn unig ond ar gyfer y gymuned Parkinson’s gyfan. Dyma fy ffordd i o ymladd Parkinson’s a gobeithio gwneud gwahaniaeth bach."

Mae Diane yn argymell gwirfoddoli i eraill yn fawr: “Byddwn i’n dweud dechrau’n fach a magu hyder. Y peth gorau am wirfoddoli mewn ymchwil i Parkinson's yw casglu gwybodaeth a dealltwriaeth. Mae angen pobl â Parkinson's ar ymchwilwyr. Heb ymchwil ni fydd unrhyw gynnydd o ran arafu datblygiad Parkinson's na dod o hyd i iachâd."

Diolch, Diane, am eich cyfraniad anhygoel 💙

As we continue to celebrate Volunteers’ Week, today we’re putting the spotlight on one of our new volunteers.

Ian from Sling near Bethesda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in December 2024. Soon after, he joined the local group in Caernarfon, where he now volunteers.

“I’m the kind of person that believes in giving something back,” Ian says. “I’ve had a fantastic life here in North Wales, and volunteering is my way of supporting Parkinson’s UK Cymru and other people living with Parkinson’s in the local community. I encourage people to get involved with the activities of the support group and we’ve organised a bucket collection to raise money at a local supermarket."

Ian sees volunteering as something really worthwhile: “Volunteering gives me a sense of satisfaction. I do feel a responsibility to ensure the support group gives people what they need. I also try to welcome more people to our group. But we have a great bunch who come along at the moment, who truly enjoy being in each other’s company.”

Thank you, Ian for all your support 💙

Wrth i ni barhau i ddathlu Wythnos Gwirfoddolwyr, heddiw rydym yn rhoi sylw i un o'n gwirfoddolwyr newydd.

Cafodd Ian o Sling ger Bethesda ddiagnosis o Parkinson's ym mis Rhagfyr 2024. Yn fuan wedyn, ymunodd â'r grŵp lleol yng Nghaernarfon, lle mae bellach yn gwirfoddoli.

“Dw i'n math o berson sy'n credu mewn rhoi rhywbeth yn ôl,” meddai Ian. “Dw i wedi cael bywyd gwych yma yng Ngogledd Cymru, a gwirfoddoli yw fy ffordd i o gefnogi Parkinson’s UK Cymru a phobl eraill sy'n byw gyda Parkinson's yn y gymuned leol. Dw i'n annog pobl i gymryd rhan yng ngweithgareddau'r grŵp cymorth ac rydym wedi trefnu casgliad i godi a***n mewn archfarchnad leol."

Mae Ian yn gweld gwirfoddoli fel rhywbeth gwerth chweil: “Mae gwirfoddoli yn rhoi ymdeimlad o foddhad i mi. 'Dw i'n teimlo cyfrifoldeb i sicrhau bod y grŵp cymorth yn rhoi'r hyn sydd ei angen ar bobl. 'Dw i hefyd yn ceisio croesawu mwy o bobl i'n grŵp. Ond mae yna griw gwych sy'n dod draw ar hyn o bryd, sy'n mwynhau bod yng nghwmni ei gilydd yn fawr.”

Diolch, Ian am yr holl gefnogaeth 💙
