Self-care looks different for everyone. 💚

For these two, last weekend it looked like an early start, tired legs, and 10k together.

We talk a lot about the importance of looking after your mental health, and last weekend MHFA Wales National Instructors and Elin put it into action. Movement, connection and fresh air are all things that we can do for ourselves to help make us feel better.

So, what will you do for self care this week? (It doesn’t have to be 10k!)

Next week is Men’s Health Week. 💚

And we want to talk about the part that often gets left out, mental health.

Men are less likely to ask for help, less likely to talk about how they’re really feeling, and more likely to reach a crisis point before anyone around them knew they were struggling.

This week, check in on the men in your life. Really check in.

Content note: this post contains statistics about su***de and mental health.

1 in 2. These aren’t numbers in a report - they’re young people in our communities, our families, our workplaces. People who deserve support, understanding, and care.

Being LGBTQIA+ doesn’t cause poor mental health. But stigma, discrimination, and feeling unseen absolutely can.

This Pride month, MHFA Wales is standing with every LGBTQIA+ person who is struggling. And we’re reminding everyone including friends, family, colleagues and managers, that you have the power to make a difference. Knowing how to have a conversation about mental health could change someone’s life.

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to face it alone.

🌟 What a night!

Wednesday evening we found ourselves in Dublin to celebrate with Mental Health First Aid Ireland as they launched ‘The Working Mind’, an exciting new course licensed by Opening Minds | Advancing Mental Wellness and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Congratulations to everyone involved. The evening was full of energy, brilliant speakers, and a shared passion. Yes, progress is being made in mental health support, but the conversation about what more can be done is just as important. ‘The Working Mind’ will go a long way to filling another gap. 💙

A huge thank you to Donal Scanlan and Jacqui Mulligan for the invitation. Jacqui’s drive and tenacity in bringing this all together is nothing short of incredible (and, frankly, a little scary! 😄).

And to Chad Scanlan from Opening Minds, thank you for being wonderful company, and for the maple syrup biscuits and cuddly moose 🫎 It was so lovely to finally meet you in person. The growth of this course is no small feat. Congratulations!

Until next time:

☀️ It’s half term, it’s glorious outside, and the pressure to do all the things is real.

Days out, activities, making memories… it can feel like if the week isn’t packed, you’re somehow doing it wrong.

But here’s a gentle reminder: children need downtime too. Unstructured time, where nothing is planned and no one has to be anywhere, is actually brilliant for wellbeing. For kids and for the grown-ups looking after them.

Lying in the garden with no agenda? Perfect.

A slow morning with nowhere to be? Absolutely fine.

Saying no to the packed itinerary? Completely okay.

You don’t have to fill every hour of the sunshine. Neither do they. 💚

We’ve spent the last few weeks sharing what becoming an MHFA Wales Instructor looks like across different sectors.

But at the heart of it, this is what’s important:

• More people in Wales knowing how to show up for someone who’s struggling.

• More workplaces where it’s safe to say you’re not okay.

• More communities where mental health is taken as seriously as physical health.

Whoever you are, wherever you work. If you live or work in Wales, find out more.

Message us or visit mhfawales.org to learn more about Instructor Training. 💚

Our next course date is 22nd June and there are limited spaces! What are you waiting for?
