โ€œThis time next year โ€ฆ thousands !โ€

Thousands of wildflowers, that is!

Today, Pontypool Park Friends and the Torfaen task force were out enjoying the glorious autumn sunshine, armed with wildflower seeds, rakes and an enormous amount of optimism

Using our highly sophisticated and scientifically questionable โ€œrake and chuckโ€ method, weโ€™ve sown the seeds for what we hope will be a beautiful display of wildflowers next year.

The aim is to bring more colour to the park and provide a little feast for our bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped. ๐Ÿ’š

Now we just need Mother Nature to do her bit.

No pressure, Mother Nature, but weโ€™ve already told everyone there will be thousands.

If next year you see an impressive display of wildflowers, youโ€™re welcome.

If you see three daisies and a dandelion, weโ€™d appreciate it if nobody mentioned this post again. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒผ Come and Help Us Sow Some Wildflowers! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฆ‹

Join Pontypool Park Friends this Saturday, 17th October, from 10am to 12pm, as we get busy sowing wildflower seeds in the park!

Weโ€™ll be using the highly technical, tried-and-tested โ€˜rake and chuckโ€™ method. No gardening qualifications required, just the ability to operate a rake and throw seeds in roughly the right direction! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Weโ€™re hoping to create beautiful patches of wildflowers that will bring more colour to the park and provide food and habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’š

Whether youโ€™re a seasoned gardener or someone who struggles to keep a cactus alive, everyone is welcome!

A huge well done to our wonderful volunteer Colin, whose fantastic photograph of the Folly Tower was featured on the weather report with Derek

Weโ€™re always proud to see our beautiful Pontypool landmarks getting a moment in the spotlight, especially when the photograph has been taken by one of our very own volunteers.๐Ÿ’š

Saturday came and we conquered a few more jobs. We cleared around our compound, to make it more presentable, we prepared some areas for wild flowers, native of course, and we tidied around the the hospital stones. All in all, a good sessions work with 4 volunteers. And we came across a really beautiful caterpillar. Dont forget anyone can come and help and we really need more members, please get in touch and come and help us maintain and improve our beautiful park.

๐Ÿ† COMMUNITY LEADER OF THE YEAR! ๐Ÿ†

We are ridiculously proud of our Chairman, Phil Adams, who has been named Community Leader of the Year 2026! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

We canโ€™t think of anyone more deserving of having all that hard work recognised.

From his work as a Scout Leader, to his involvement with the Torfaen Task Force, and of course everything he does with us at Pontypool Park Friends, Phil gives so much of his time, energy and enthusiasm to the community.

He is one of those people who seems to be everywhere, helping everyone, usually while already having seventeen other things to do. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Phil is a huge part of the Torfaen community and an even bigger part of our little Pontypool Park Friends team.

We see first-hand just how much he does, so seeing him standing there with that award makes us incredibly proud.

Congratulations, Chairman Phil! Very, very well deserved. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ†

If you have a couple of hours this morning, and want to get in the fresh air, then meet us at 10 at the compound by the bowls club. Imagine what we can do together. If youndont want to dig or prune, then litter pick or clean. I am sure we can find a job.

We may be a small group of volunteers, but we are MIGHTY! ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒฟ

In just our two hour monthly task session, we tackled the car park, clearing brambles, overgrowth and rubbish, and what a difference two hours can make!

Weโ€™re absolutely chuffed with how it looks and slightly amazed at just how much a small but determined group can achieve when armed with tools, teamwork and a healthy dislike of brambles. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Tomorrow, however, may involve aching muscles and several questionable attempts to get out of chairs without assistance.

If you see one of our volunteers moving like a Playmobil figure tomorrow, please be kind. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Small team. Big effort. Brilliant result. ๐Ÿ’š

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, got stuck in and left the park looking rather fabulous!

๐Ÿ“ข Bank Holiday Opening Update

Unfortunately, weโ€™ve made the decision to cancel our Bank Holiday opening of the Shell grotto and Folly.

With the continued hot and dry weather in Wales, our priority has to be protecting the surrounding farmland and livestock, and we donโ€™t want to create any additional risk while conditions remain so dry.

Weโ€™re hoping to arrange a Saturday opening once conditions improve and will share the date as soon as weโ€™re confident we can open safely.

Thank you so much for your understanding and patience. ๐Ÿ’š

And in a sentence rarely uttered in Walesโ€ฆ

we could really do with some rain! โ˜”๐Ÿ˜‚
