A busy afternoon in the WI garden

We thought we might be rained off but a big thank you to everyone (especially Sarah's husband who lent a hand) who helped w**d, deadhead and tidy the garden today.
It was abit windy but the sun did come out and we were glad to see Joyce who brought us a welcome drink.
Its looking so much better now , and ready for some new planting.

Our Reading Group topic for June: Food and Drink ( a mouthwatering evening!)

A great selection of cookery books- Delia's winter recipes, ( Janet's favourite is chocolate bread and butter pudding), Farmhouse Kitchen Cook Book, Stanley Tucci's Taste with lots of Italian delights and Rima brought in a Baltic cookbook reflecting her own heritage.

We all love Mary Berry and Margaret is reading her autobiography.

Not forgetting the wide range of fiction writing featuring food and drink, - Kristin Hannah's Four Winds and A Scottish tea shop in Napoli.

Lots of chat about what we like to cook and what our mothers taught us. Thank you to Barbara for hosting and delicious cake.

We are having a summer break now until September when or topic will be "Going on Holiday"

A hot afternoon at the Poplars, Newton on Derwent

Members enjoyed a guided tour by Peter and Christina of this extensive garden with a diverse range of plants starting in the front gardens, moving into the kitchen garden and for those who could manage in the heat finishing with the paddock walk to the arboretum. Then a welcome cup of tea and delicious ginger and lemon cake. Thank you to our hosts.

Our Reading Group topic this month "Buildings"

Sarah hosted our meeting and started us off by reading the poem "Building" by Philip Larkin.
Books discussed included Rachel Hore's "The Secret of Dragonfly Lodge", Inn at the Top, Neil Hanson and a directory of historic houses revealed lots of places in Yorkshire to vist.
Gillian spoke about the Treasurers House in York and Barbara about buildings she had visited on her recent trip to Australia.
As always we finished with tea/coffee/cake and a nice chat.

The theme for our next meeting is books featuring "Food and Drink"

EYFWI Spring Meeting 26 April
What a super day at the Spring Meeting. The speakers were excellent and we all enjoyed the music of Nicola Mills. It was a lovely day to enjoy the sunshine at lunch time, browse the stalls and catch up with everybody. Thank you to the Trustees for organising the day.

Entertaining and interesting quiz!
Derek Clark who scours car boot sales for unusual objects brought along a selection and we had to guess what they were used for. Items included a Spurtle, a box for transporting ferrets, a branding iron used on lobster pots and a suppository maker. Certainly tested our knowledge!
