⭐ CARERS WEEK - HIDDEN HEROES⭐

The UK has 5.8 million unpaid carers with an estimated 1 million being young carers, where they can often be unidentified and therefore unable to access support.

Plymouth Young Carers group offers respite, one to one work and group sessions alongside building a supportive community of like-minded peers and youth worker support. Many young carers often miss out on parts of childhood due to their caring responsibilities so we also aim to fill the gap and provide an opportunity to enjoy typical childhood experiences, as you can see from this video! 😀

If you know someone who you believe may be a young carer, please email [email protected] to request a referral form for our services.

The reality is that many young carers face emotional, social and practical challenges that can impact their wellbeing, education and future opportunities.

Every young carer's experience is different, but recognising their role and ensuring they can access the right support can make a meaningful difference! Swipe to see the most common myths surrounding around young carers ➡

⭐ CARERS WEEK 2026 - BUILDING A CITY OF SUPPORT ⭐

We asked our Young Carers group to think about their dream city during our sessions. Drawing on their experiences as young carers, they reflected on challenges such as long waits for medical appointments, having to repeat their story to different professionals and limited mental health funding.

Using their insights, we created a digital image of their dream “City of Support” highlighting features such as affordable fresh food for all, access to sports to support their wellbeing, a puppy shop to support mental health and happiness, a youth centre to have somewhere to go, a dance studio and fully accessible spaces for disabled people. They also mentioned 'invisible' support such as free child support and donating money to those who need it, helping to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive 🫂💞

⭐CARERS WEEK 2026 - BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY ⭐

To celebrate Carers Week 2026 we asked our young carers to build a wall of community, including features they believe would improve their experience of growing up as a carer.

Their suggestions including healthy lifestyle ideas such as quicker diagnosis time frames, more opportunities for sport and support with sleep habits which in turn would improve their mental health. We discussed the impact of social media and they suggested the world would be a better place with more kindness, dignity and support for each other 💞
