Thursday 6th June 2024 10.00am: Americans in Plymouth, D-Day 80 Walk
Starting from Victoria Road Railway Station, Wolseley Road, St Budeaux, Plymouth, PL5 1JJ. Alan Barclay (Walks with History) will lead a walk entitled ‘Americans in Plymouth’, visiting sites associated with American forces in St Budeaux and Saltash looking at the build up of forces in to D-Day. At Saltash Passage there is a service of rememberance taking place and at Saltash we will be visiting the former United States Navy Advanced Amphibious Base (at low tide) to see work being undertaken volunteers to clear the historic groynes of seaweed, allowing a clear view of the site. The base is now a scheduled Ancient Monument.
This will be the first of four free Walks from the Train in 2024 thanks to our National Lottery Heritage Fund funding from the Tamara Landscape Partnership. This walk is timed to meet anyone from the Tamar Valley who wants to join us. The train departs from Gunnislake (9.19am), Calstock (9.31am), Bere Alston (9.40am) and Bere Ferrers (9.45am). For further information and to book a place please email [email protected]
The Walk is 2.5 miles in length and includes two short but steep sections of walking - one uphill and one downhill.
Local buses 2, 2A, 10, 11, 12, 12A, 21, 21A, 43, 50 and 51 stop at St Budeaux Square, a few metres from our start point. There is free local on street parking in St Budeaux and Barne Barton. There are shops in St Budeaux and a selection of pubs and cafes on the waterfront at Saltash. The walk does not return to the start point.
