Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Plymouth

Yesterday we were the proud recipients of a new drone, donated by Devon & Cornwall Police

It combines high-resolution visual cameras, thermal imaging and a laser rangefinder, helping our team search areas, spot heat signatures and share precise locations with ground search teams.
It will be an incredibly valuable asset in building upon our existing drone and land search capabilities, on and around Dartmoor and South Devon.

Our Team Leader, Jay Morrish attended the handover with representatives from our sister team from Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Ashburton.

A huge thanks again to Devon & Cornwall Police for their very kind donation.

Tuesdays training 💪🏽

Last night's training was on a wet and wild Yennadon Down, Dartmoor.

After a search, two casualties were located, a mother and daughter, who both required first aid and reassurance. However, both casualties collapsed and needed CPR for a prolonged period of time, testing each member's first aid skills.

Unexploded bomb in Falmouth.

Today we were invited to attend Falmouth to assist Devon and Cornwall Police with asking residents to leave the inner cordon for the WW2, unexploded bomb.

It was another opportunity for us to work alongside the Police and other emergency services from the Coastguard, our sister Search Teams, Devon and Cornwall 4x4 and the Rapid Relief Team 🙏🏽

Training Tuesday 💪🏽

Last night was a challenging exercise. A walker had fallen on a dangerous slope next to the Dewerstone and received an open fracture to his lower leg.

Thrown into the mix was a crime scene, where teams had to think about crime scene preservation.

After receiving first aid, the casualty was placed into a stretcher and with the aid of the rope team lowered to a more safer location.

Whether you're an office worker, teacher, student, engineer, tradesperson or retiree, what matters most is your attitude.

Together we'll help develop the skills needed to search for missing people, support casualty rescues and assist the emergency services across Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

My name is Alannah & I'm a mountain rescue volunteer for Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Plymouth (DSRTP).

DSRTP are a charity fully funded by donations from kind supporters like yourselves and completely ran by amazing volunteers.

This year I am going to walk the High Moor Link which runs from Buckfastleigh to Tavistock. This route is around 37km long, covering rough, boggy and hilly terrain over some of Dartmoor's most beautiful landscapes. I've never attempted anything like this before and if you know me, you know how much I hate cardio!

During the walk I will be carrying a full kit bag, which contains everything I have on me whenever we get a call out. All the kit plus water and, most importantly, snacks, this will probably weigh around 10kgs. This will be my toughest challenge yet.

🚨 Could you be our next trainee? 🚨

When the phone rings, our volunteers leave work, family dinners, warm beds and evenings with friends to help people they have never met.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth is recruiting for our 2026/27 trainee intake.

We're looking for people from all walks of life who are willing to learn, work as part of a team and give back to their community.

As a trainee you'll receive training in:

🧭 Navigation
🔎 Search techniques
🚑 Casualty care
📻 Radio communications
🧗 Rope work
🤝 Teamwork and leadership

No previous Search and Rescue experience is required. We'll teach you the skills.

What we can't teach is commitment, reliability and a genuine desire to help others.
