Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean - POGO

Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean - POGO Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean, POGO, is a forum of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote global ocean observing.

CIO registered in England & Wales, No 1171692 The Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean, POGO, is a forum created in 1999 by directors and leaders of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote global ocean observing. Of particular focus is the implementation of an international and integrated global ocean observing system. POGO is a partnership of institutions involved

in oceanographic observations, scientific research, operational services, education and training. POGO has members all over the world, and works closely with other international and regional programmes and organisations. As the scale of these activities becomes global, there is an increasing value in coordination among the institutions involved. Through joint planning and exchange of information, the community can make better use of the limited resources available. POGO does not set scientific goals, but focuses attention on implementation issues such as technical compatibility among observing networks; shared use of infrastructure; and on public outreach and capacity building. POGO's Mission

POGOโ€™s Mission is to:
1. Lead innovation and development of the crucial components of the ocean observing system.
2. Identify and contribute to the development of the key skills, capabilities and capacities needed to achieve the vision.
3. Work with Governments, Foundations and Industry, to articulate the benefits to society and required funding to build and sustain the system. Our vision is to have by 2030, world-wide cooperation for a sustainable, state-of-the-art global ocean observing system that serves the needs of science and society.

We are happy to welcome Abasiofon Essien Timothy, PhD student at the University of Calabar (Nigeria), who was awarded the 2026 Ocean Decade NF-POGO-SeaNetwork-GEOMAR Shipboard Training Fellowship and will join the WASCAL Floating University aboard the RV Polarstern, under the supervision of Dr Bjำงrn Fiedler and Dr Tobias Hahn (Geomar Helmholtz-Zentrum fรผr Ozeanforschung Kiel, Germany).

The curriculum of the WASCAL Cabo Verde Floating University includes lectures on topics such as ocean observation and marine ecology, as well as hands-on research activities, including measurements of ocean surface properties. Ofon will join the students of the WASCAL Master's programme Climate Change and Marine Sciences on this training that includes the expedition itself, from Mindelo (Cabo Verde) to Bremerhaven (Germany), and pre- and post-cruise workshops on land, totaling from 27 April to 19 May 2026.

We congratulate Ofon and wish a successful cruise to all crew.

Ofon had his application selected from the 2025 NF-POGO Open Call for Shipboard Training. Our annual NF-POGO Open Calls work as a database of qualified applications for shipboard training. When an opportunity appear, POGO shortlists candidates from this database.
The 2026 edition has recently open to applications. Visit https://mailchi.mp/pogo-ocean/oc26 (link also in bio) for more information. Apply now and take your science to sea!

We are delighted to welcome Brenda Wambui Wanjiku, Co-Founder & CEO of Nutriee Fish (Kenya), NANO member and NF-POGO CofE scholar, for the next session of our NANO Webinar Series.

๐Ÿ“Œ The Ocean is Not Just Research: Rethinking Science, Opportunity, and Enterprise

Brenda translates marine science into real-world solutions for nutrition, livelihoods, and climate resilience. She will share how she channels scientific research into ocean-based ventures, and what that journey looks like in practice.
This is a wonderful session for ECOPs curious about pathways beyond academia, entrepreneurship, science communication, or applied ocean work.
